Is anyone using the Shindy Speed Feed with a FS-90?

I have been thinking about getting a 90, but not if I can't use the Speed Feed.

I have a speed feed on my fs80...same stuff as your 90.

Your Stihl dealer should have a adapter for the speed feed heads.

Of course the dealer I went to, sold both stihl and Shindy.

I bought one but haven't gotten it on the trimmer yet. Just buy the "universal" speed feed and it comes with adapters to fit various makes and models of trimmers.

what is the difference between the speed feed and what will come stock on the fs90?

I put a speed feed on my Echo yesterday. Seems to work fine and is a direct fit.

Back when I had four of the 90's I had speed feeds on all four. Now I have Speedfeeds on Echo, Stihl and Redmax. The only thing that I have that a speedfeed will not fit on is a Kaw kgt27a, so I put a redmax gearbox on there then the speedfeed.

We have a Speed Feed on an Echo, but I'm wanting to make sure it will work on the FS-90 before we buy one.

I had read somewhere on here that it would not work on the 90.

Trust me, they will fit on a 90 but it may need a different adapter. I cannot remember but it is either echo and stihl or echo and redmax that has the same size arbor. I think it is echo and stihl.

Will NOT fit on a FS90 nor is there an adaptor to make it fit the new speed feed heads. The old part number for the adapter does NOT work with the new stihl FS90s.

I use the 25-2 Stihl heads, similar principal but you have to insert line on both sides of the head, takes about 2 minutes to reload the spool.

They must have changed something in the last couple of months, because the last time I bought a new head it fit right on my 90.

Apparently they did. They hole in the speed feed head is smaller than the threaded shaft on the Stihll. The only adapters they offer are male thread which then makes the speed feed head "male"... the Stil requires a head with female threads.

The Stihl would require a smaller driven shaft that would require taking the gearbox apart and replacing the drive.

Wrong. The Speed-Feed Universal head (p/n 78890-21000 for a 450 and 78890-18000 for a 375) include large and small female adaptors.

You'd better tell shindaiwa that.... because the distributor said they don't work with the new heads.

Those heads only come with MALE adaptors, I have one of each new in the package sitting in front of me.

I think I know the problem here. The one that you are talking about from Shindy dealer is for the Shindy [they have female gearboxes]. The speedfeed for the Stihl will be the Oregon Universal speedfeed. BTW, the Shindy heads just happen to be the same size as the Echo before you use the studs that come with the head.

You got the "Shindaiwa only" version of the speed feed. Go here and get the "Universal" version, it comes with male and female adapters to fit the 90 and just about every other make/model of trimmer. I just bought a 375 and the female adapter that came on the head had to be changed out so that I could install the adapter that would fit the barb on the end of the Stihl trimmer. It works, trust me.

Thanks, I was about to ask if anyone was using one with a FS-90. :)

Where did you get your Speed Feed, from a dealer or you ordered it?

There is no difference between the Shindaiwa Universal heads from a Shindaiwa dealer, or the Oregon or Stens Speedfeed heads.

Like someone else said, you must not have the Universal model. I know for a fact that it has both male & female adaptors.

Go here for the fit-up chart: http://www.shindaiwa.com/usa/en/_docs/SpeedFeed_FitupChart.pdf

It will work on the FS90.

Go here for the fit-up chart: http://www.shindaiwa.com/usa/en/_docs/SpeedFeed_FitupChart.pdf

It will work on the FS90.

according to that chart, 2 adapters are required the 78890-11380 and then the male stud adapter.

The part number 78890-11380 does NOT come with any speed feed head according to Shindaiwa.

If you guys are using the "oregon" head please give me the part number for the head that INCLUDES both of these bushings....

The Shin dealer says that part number 78890-11380 is NO LONGER AVAILABLE same as he told me before.

A bunch of guys claim this universal head (which I have in front of me has all the adapters required.... not so. I went back by the shin dealer today and the universal head only comes with male adapters.

What is the part number of the "universal" speed feed that the dealer gave you? I just bought a "universal" 375 and it definitely came with both male and female adapters. Also, the chart included with the head was incorrect for what I needed to attach it to a Stihl FS-55R. It told me that I needed a female adapter and a male adapter while I only ended up needing the female.

Universal Speed Feed 375: #78890-18000
Universal Speed Feed 450: #78890-21000

It is the 375 universal head.... we went thruough everyone he had on the rack. None had the female adapter which is required on the FS90

And it's part #78890-18000? If it is that # then I would return what you bought from the dealer and purchase a 375 off of the site in my previous post. It came with both the male and female adapters.

my dealer said stihl does not make a speed feed for there trimmers. and he did think a shindy would work even with and adapter.

Yes, that chart is wrong (which only adds to the confusion). It says to use a socket+stud for the FS90, when in fact you only use "socket" to make it a female. But the Universal heads DO fit the FS90.
Both the Speed-Feed 375 Uni. and the Speed-Feed 450 Universal include female adaptors. Three different sizes. I'm holding both models in my hands right now. The bushing for the FS90 is 8mm x 1.25 LH. Shindaiwa part number 78890-15340. The part number mentioned earlier (78890-11380) is not the right one (too big, 10mm). The Speed-Feed Universal heads includes bushings for 7mm, 8mm and 10mm in BOTH male & female. This combination of sizes fits nearly all brands of trimmers.

BTW
The FS55 uses the same size adaptor as the FS90.

Should I get a Speed-Feed 375 or 450 Universal for my FS80R ?

I'd go for the 375, smaller and lighter head so perfect for a smaller displacement trimmer. My main gripe about the 375 is that it holds very little line, requiring more frequent loading than the much larger 450
