thanks man, you can def have this in a few years i started older then you so just keep working hard. And I dont have an edger because i just dont see the need for it i got my trimmers and thats all i need i think its just easier because that does everything and i just dont wantta waste time to grab the edger, edge then go grab a trimmer just what works for me and no companies around here use edgers.

I will I had more accounts last year but I dropped 2 and one moved to pennsylvaina:cry:, about 75% of the companies edge here 25% do it monthly, and I would say almost everyther does it fortnightly. I do it weekly howver but I do use my trimmers a lot since it never gets real bad.

im using craftsman from sears, they are cheap and easy, i dont use mine much, but i did run the one with the big wheels into the ground it lasted me like a year, but i use the black one maybe once or twice a day not much at all .

Basically the same amount as last year. Actually lost a few due to i raised a few prices that i under bidded. How many days a week do you cut? And I will let you know when i am going to get a logo if you know of a good company. Probably in a month or so I have been plagued with equipment break downs so far this year which ate up alot of money.

I just bought a 48 Exmark Metro. And I want to get a saw. And might be getting a tiller. I have bidded on a few sod jobs and it would be easier for me to just buy one than to keep renting one. But I am not sure. Got to start saving for college.

The design looks good but when you make a striping kit you need something to really bend the grass. Rollers are best obviously. But a rigid piece of rubber works to. Just try out different things. Looks good tho myfriend

I did go to my local community college and took a few courses in landscape design & business management, but I'm really not a school kind of guy, I skipped all the BS classes (I know some guys are going to say theres no such thing as BS Classes blah blah blah but I dont need to read shakespeare to run a professional business) I never tried to get my associates, just take useful courses and spent the rest of my time doing what I love. I wouldn't necessarily advise anyone to do this but it was what I felt would help me the most and I have no complaints at all. Also, as far as buying someone out, I recently bought a handful of accounts from a local guy and its worked out real well, just have him introduce you to existing clients and you should be able to keep a good % of them

Fords the only way to go, never had any real issues with any of the trucks, the 09 250's my personal truck in addition to a work truck, I love it, looking forward to plowing with it this coming winter (trucks still pretty new to me)
The 150's my right hand guys personal driver & an extra work truck when we get real busy, never can have too many trucks out there with your logo on the doors lol As for the skipping school to work, I'm definately with you there, my junior & senior years in highschool I skipped a bunch of times to try to keep up with the work load especially during fall cleanups. I always hated class and in college I didn't want to pay for credits that wouldn't do a damn thing to help me better my business and myself

Yea you have to pay insurance and it will cost more than a dump trailer, but it is another truck and I already wish I had a second truck. Plus its a dump and they can be really usefull. And it looks like I am not the only one who skips school to work, senior year is a joke.

Which is nice too, so you don't take on the whole load all at once. You figure out the first 20 properties and when fall rolls around you will be able to handle more.

It's good, it's been a huge challenge to work around all the rain we've been having here, but I guess it could be worse and we could have no rain! Just working on getting more spraying accounts for next year and I should be set.

Well this is the first time ive been able to get on here in a while and update some stuff. Been so busy lately it insane, im up to over 100 customers for just lawn maintenance, i have two full time employees now which we cut grass 4 days a week, then the other 2 or 3 we do installs, or trim hedges stuff like that. I am also starting to dip my hands in hardscaping work here and there so that is also good. Heres some pictures of a huge tree job i did for a new complex i might get next year its a huge office complex with around 8 arces, then the owners may want me to take care of his 40 arce home. Another lady wants me to send a guy to her house 3 days a week to trim, plant, and pull weeds. Also i am looking to get a dump truck, im looking for an izuzu landscape dump, and also may look into gettting another lazer a 60 who knows if not this year def next year. The trucks i used for the tree job were from my dads work, a chevy 7500 crane truck, then a 2009 3500 stake body.

Dang dude there must be no competition where you live seriously. Great job keep up the good work.

Theres a ton of competition where I live, you see landscapers at every corner, we do good work, at a fair price, I advertise a lot with yard signs, on yellowpages.com, and I am in a few diners, and also on the back of receipts at a few grocery stores. Just stay by your work, do a good job, and just get every and any job you can and just do the best work on it. Also i have refer a friend programs which work very well, and know a lot of people that know a lot of people, also talk about your business to any one you meet.

Ok heres some pictures for a hedge job we did for the apartment complex's i work for, we trimmed around 350 hedges for them and they turn out real nice now i just have to get them to let me lay down some new mulch and some annual color. We also did 12 residential house hedges within the past two weeks. I have been supper busy like none stop. I am starting a very large advertising campaign in a few select townships i would like to be in and also am going to be in a very upscale magazine at the 10 richest golf clubs in my area, with my business being on the back cover. Also joined a BNI group the other day and have already revived 5 new jobs from that. Also just added my second full time employee so everything is going insane. Heres some pictures of the hedge jobs

Thanks man yea I'm shocked how much my business has expanted this year its crazy but then also its a ton of work during the day and at night but def will all be worth it. The hedge trimming set up is great your can run like 6 hedge trimmers out of the generator barley use any gas, and your production is way up and at a fraction of the price if one of the guys hits something with the trimmers there only 50 bucks to replace

Thats good man, yea ive been so busy and doing a lot of landscaping work and not as much just cutting grass, we have 7 installs lined up for the next couple weeks, then once the fall comes around when it actually cools down we have to put in 2 new lawns that i already landed so over a dozen aeration jobs, plus leaves which im hoping to do around 70 fall clean-ups so we shall see. Also taking down 3 55' pines in jersey in two weeks. And in regards to the dump I am hoping to grab it saturday we shall see if everything goes as planed but who knows.

Man I am busy but not that busy. I am putting a new lawn in in a few weeks and am trying to close on an install right now plus I just got a call to go check out another one so we shall see. Alot of people are just really cheap around here and will literally price shop for months until they find the right price. exactly we do around 400 some cuts a month i make a very good profit on that and that includes paying each guy there 160 hrs a month out of that and then rent etc. then the real profit is in the landscaping work, i went on 4 estimates today, 2 clean up jobs, a fence install, and anothe rjob to install 85 arps around a property. people around here are cheap too but if you know the right people and have good work people dont mind to pay the price

Nice man, only problem arouynd here is people look for the cheapest guy then he screws it up real bad and they go out and look for a cheaper price. My neighbor who price shopped had a guy install sod: no stagering of the seams, sod going a few inches onto the sidewalk, and he didnt cut the end pieces that went into beds. Plus I dont think he ever graded the yard. They didnt care and its all dead now.

Murray, Let me tell you how much of an inspiration you are. I'm 31 and looking to get started in the business. I'm a fire fighter and want to be out side more, but also be able to do a little more for my family. After reading all 43 pages or so your thread, your story really helps to give me confidence. Don't take this the wrong way, but I told my wife, "if this kid can do what he has done, why cant I be successful as well."

Keep up the great work.:clapping:

Thanks man that means a lot, yea ive put in a lot of long hours day in and day out and missed out on some stuff but its all worth it, I have the upper hand tho because i just put every penny i make back into the business to make it keep growing so that may be the only challenge that you maybe face that i have an advantage with to grow the way my business has.

Honestly, and this may piss some off, I'm in the same boat as you. I will be putting all the money back in for a while. I have a great paying career and my wife's is even better. I'm going into business for two reasons. I'm tired of seeing people do shoddy work. I do better work than that, so why not offer my services. 2. I just want to be out side working. I used to build and service swimming pools when I was about your age. I miss manual labor and the reward of completing a job.

Man, I'm in love with that truck. Make sure you use it to it's fullest potential, that truck should have a GVWR of about 15k. I wish I had a truck like that, the late 1990's and early 2000's 3500 HDs are one of my favorite trucks. Lots of capacity in a small package.

Any new updates?

we have been so busy but now we are really starting to slow down even though we just started doing our fall clean-ups. I have a leaf vac on the dump truck which works great. Also just picked up an 8' snowdogg plow and it is getting installed on monday. Have been really busy picked up at new 1500 sqft shop a couple of weeks ago so been busy with that also, put in around 7 new lawns this fall and a couple other big installs i will throw up some pictures some time tomorrow. Also the biggest job as a company yet did a total landscape overall at a new apartment building.

As in regards for next year with some of the thing i have on the drawling board I could triple my business with some of the commercial accounts i am looking to pick up and is in the works. I have picked up 5 new commercial accounts. Also have installs and side jobs booked up a month and a half out next spring. That without any of the adverting we have going out. This is going to be the first year i really start to advertise. Its looking like I am going to have a lawn maintenance crew for next year and then an install crew which i will be one. Also looking to add another lazer and a 48 exmark tthp. how business going for you?
