Im getting ready to install a dry laid brick walk. This is for a new house that does not have an established yard. Can I use the shell rock/dirt that was used to back fill the house as my base layer. It is about 6-8" deep and I plan to compact it then put about an inch or so of leveling sand on top of it before laying the bricks.

i wouldn't... you need a deep heavily compacted solid base of just #57 stone especially if its a new house it takes years for the dirt to settle around new construction

On a new house you will need to dig up any fill material that was placed and put down gravel and compact it in layers. I'm sure the fill seems solid now, but it is not compacted enough for a walkway. Your base needs to be made of uniform material for consistant compaction.
