I decided on a whim to travel to the local CAT dealer to look at the used equipment offerings. I see a couple of used machines that look fairly clean and as it turns out I know the previous owner of one of the machines.

On the lot is a 277C with 1200 hours and a 257B2 with 281 hours on it. Young salesman jones out with me barely out of the truck. He's young, never sold equipment before but is 2 years in. Fairly straight talker and admits his limits.

We talk and he lets me run the 277C as the 257 is just too small for my needs. 277C; Its clean, single speed, no high flow, pressurized AC cab, hydraulic coupler, and brand new tracks. Machine is well cared for obviously. U/C bogies/idler are nearing the replacement point. The air susp seat is nice.

And it should be because my butt would be hurting from the bending over on the Sale price-$47,000.00:dizzy:

This should be a 37K or less machine on the lot at this point. U/C needs the work in about 300 hours and the machine is low optioned.

I see "C" series machines on MT with VTS and more options/less hours for same or less money in the 262 class.

Funnier part of the story, he told me someone was trying to unload a 299C as above with less than 150 hours for 55K and had no takers on a private basis....

47K? Obviously that CAT store hasn't read a newspaper or turned on a TV in about a year and half. I doubt the kid sets the prices, but someone there obviously has there head up their arse.

Did you see it at Stowers on Old Rutledge or at Cat Rental off of Lovell? I haven't ever been too impressed with their compact inventory at the Lovell location.

Lovell. This machine was a trade-in from a really large land development contractor from Maryville-you might know of them. Late last year they had enough CAT equipment sitting on their yard they could have qualified as the 2nd or 3rd largest CAT dealer in the State. I did some sub work on one of their projects 2 years ago.

Ok, another even funnier story related to CAT and the local dealer. So I have a crew moving equipment from one site to another. They are moving a Komatsu skid steer (CK35) in a white non-descript F250.

My "project super" notices a CAT branded truck start following them briefly and then he pulls into a conv. store that sells off-road diesel to fuel up the Komatsu. The CAT truck disappears down the road and then suddenly reappears behind them while at the pump.

This is no joke, the guy jumps out and he starts a sales pitch on how CAT skids are waaay better than Komatsu (at least he knows that) and asks if we are interested in trading it off. This is today... after I stopped yesterday into their branch on a whim and no, there is now way they could have known that this truck belonged to me. We are interested in another machine by the way my guys say. Oh man, this gets him going even more....talking about how they are really motivated to make any sale right now (CAT dealers would never use the word "desperate":nono:) and that the deals of a lifetime are to be had right now....

They gave him my phone # and he said that he would for sure be calling me tomorrow. We'll see.
