I know I am a newbie to the forums and even to the industry, but I am a business man and the smartest choice I made starting this business is the decision I made to join Servicemagic.com.

Some of you may have heard of it, and I'll tell you up front it is not for everyone.

Servicemagic.com is a company that takes home/commercial property requests and forwards them to industry professionals. These are not free, they do cost. I pay $12 - $18 for each lead I receive whether I win the bid or not.

How it works:

You must have an EIN.
You must be insured for your states minimum requirement.
You must be registered with the state (dba and sales and use tax).

There is a $99.00 Lifetime membership fee plus a advance pay for leads. Initially they'll offer you a discount on leads, I bought $200 worth of leads for $150.00, and the discount gets bigger the more you buy initially.

So:

1. They customer makes the request thru servicemagic.com
2. An automated machine calls you with the lead instantly.
3. ANSWER THE PHONE! and return the call to the customer immediately. Time is wasting, and there is no time to waste. My experience is the first company to call the customer gets the job. Out of the past 10 calls I have won 9 of them all either weekly or bi-weekly customers.

There is more detail, but I'll let the rep explain to you. It really works I assure you. However, you need to check what their (servicemagic) % of leads in your zipcodes are. My coverage averages 16 leads per month but since friday thursday last week I have gotten 7 new regular customers, what is that like 6 days, not to bad.

The leads are guarenteed to go to you, and no more than 2 other professionals in your coverage area, but you need to be on the ball, keep that phone on your chest so you can hear it when your mowing, or get a secretary :)

My Sales agent was:

David Coffelt
ServiceMagic, Inc.
dcoffelt@servicemagic.com
(877) 800-3177 Ext.8795
www.servicemagic.com

If interested call him. I'm telling you it works and I expect to be hiring my first crew within the next month or two.

If you have any questions, post them.

Sincerely,
Donald

No, actual I am Donald. And SM is not BS. If you get the call return it, simple as that. If you fail to return the call or pick-up the phone then it's on you.

And as far as tall grass goes, I get those calls from everyone.

SM provides the leads, simple as that, if you can't land them, then its on you. Works great for me. Hell I got 2 more clients today. But then again, I answered the phone and called the customer asap.

P.S. I get no discounts/commision or anything else. There has been so much talk of it being a poor year, I thought I would help out some for those who haven't heard of it.

Thanks for the links and I'll take heed, however thus far it is working for me.

I return the call, say my services for mowing start at $30 and I'll be there in ___ amount of time to give you a detailed synopsis of our work and a final estimate.

So far the leads I responded to as the first contractor to call I have won.

As far as the other jobs like remodeling and such where the work costs $1000's of dollars I would not use SM cause you should know people are just shopping around for prices.

But lawn service is basic, and the people that are using SM "want" service now. So it works out for the small things imho.
