Last year I ripped up a bunch of stupid and randomly placed things planted in the yard, and tried to fill in a couple spots. I bought a bag of Scotts Turf Builder Tall Fescue Blend to try and fix the areas that were now dirt. It took fairly well in a couple spots, but not so great in others. This year I need to get some topsoil and fix a few more spots before trying to reseed them.
I have both #5 and #2 growing in the front yard. The #5 is growing a LOT faster (over a foot tall), and the #2 is only about 4" tall maybe.
I've noticed that I seem to have a bunch of different types of grass, so I wanted to identify them, figure out what's best for me, and find out what the next best step would be to do. I walked around my yard, grabbed a piece of grass from each different type that I could distinguish. I have taken pictures of them and numbered them below.
I am located in Maryland, between Baltimore and Annapolis. I'm on ON the water though.
My front yard will not see much activity.
My back yard, I have 2 dogs, so I realize that NOTHING is dog-proof, and they're going to have their "trails" through the yard, but if I'd like to go with the most dependable thing. Half my back yard has a lot of shade, that's where you see all of the #1 and #2 growing, very well. The other half gets quite a bit of sun, and that's where #4 mainly is showing up, sparsely.
Around one of my trees out back, (huge tall oak), I have noticed that I've got a lot of #1 & #2 growing towards the NORTH side, and mostly #6 clumpy growing on the SOUTH side, I don't know if that's just coincidence or not...maybe that South side is getting a lot of sun.
According to this chart, I'm Zone #1:
http://www.landscape-america.com/grasses/grasses.html
Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, red fescue, turf-type tall fescue
1 = Growing VERY fast and tall.
2 = Probably Kentucky Bluegrass?

Almost looks like Bentgrass? I'm not on a golf course though.:)

3 = Is this the same as #2, just without the flowery part spread out yet?
4 = Plucked out of a clump
5 = Tall Fescue Mix (I planted this)
6 = Plucked out of a clump...Red Fescue?
Thanks for taking the time to read. Just wondering which direction I should be going in. Seems the Bluegrass and Tall Fescue Mix both do well out front, I don't know which is the better way to go.
