View Full Version : Removing Blades

I just purchased a 2009 36/17 and want to sharpen the blades. I tried to loosen the bolt with a wrench while holding onto the blade but the blade just turned and the bold stayed tight. Can this be done with hand tools or is there a need for an impact wrench?

My impact wrench has saved me a LOT of time.

The bolt goes all the way through the spindle from top to bottom. You need to take the cover off of the top and then you will see. If you want to do it manually, then you need to have one wrench/breaker bar on the top and another wrench/breaker bar on the bottom. The easiest way to take care of it though is to use an impact wrench on the nut at the top.

If your model is a fixed deck then PTP is correct, it is a through bolt and you will have to hold the nut on top also. If it is a WSES/RH, then these are not through bolt and sometimes you have to hold the pulley up top when using a wrench as the blade can spin, holding the pulley will stop the shaft from spinning and holding the blade can't always stop that.

What are the torque specs on this? Just bought the same machine, fixed deck. I'll be using an impact on it, so I don't want to over tighten. Checked the manual and searched online and couldn't find an answer.

You will want to torque the blade bolts to between 70 and 80 ftlbs.
