A. No, I am not licensed for applications, yet. Sometime in the next 2 weeks I will take the test.
B. I don't apply chemicals or buy them. I will advise my customers as what to use, but that's all.
(every thread I look at here asks these questions, so I figured I get it out of the way...)
I know of a pull behind sprayer coming up for sale here, with a 5hp briggs and a 40 gal tank. It has the boom with 5 nozzles as well as the gun. My question is: would there be any reason I can't but a ~100' hose reel for the gun on this? I would like the keep this thing in a separate trailer and use it for an ersatz skid sprayer, but if ever needed, use it as a tow behind unit. When I do get into chems, my budget would be small, and I can get this unit pretty nicely.

40 gallons isn't very much, it would only be good for spot treatments. If the pump and motor are in good shape, it may be worth buying just for those, then getting your hose real and a bigger tank. I have a 200 gal tank, and I wish it was 300 or even 400.

It might have a very small pump too. It would work ok as long as your only spraying 1 or 2 gls/min.

Excellent advice. I started with a 200 gal. After the first year it wasn't enough. By the end of my second year I converted my first sprayer to 300gal and my second sprayer I bought was a space saver but still 300gal. I have and still use them both daily during my spray rounds. No way could I get in a full day with anything less spraying at a 2 gal rate. The boom would be nice for large wide open properties but would be almost useless on small properties as a tow behind(JMO). Likewise the 100 ft hose reel would not be enough hose. However, if the price is right and the sprayer is in decent shape it could come in handy. For my area and the average size lawns I treat(12-15k) it would not be my first choice to start my business with.

Most of my mowing accounts (those would be my targets) are 6K, or less, with one exception. there is no MFG data left on the thing, its all worn down. I'll take some pictures and maybe you'll be able to help with an approximate pump size, etc...
Thanks!

My average lawn size is about 6k too. With a 40 gal tank, you would only be able to treat 3 lawns before you had to go home and re-mix. 100' of hose won't do it either. I have 300' and have a few lawns where I have to move the truck to reach it all.

Is it a diaphragm pump? Or a roller pump? The tank is rather small--but--you can get a 300 gallon tank for about 250. (Can your trailer handle the weight? ) Get a reel big enough for 300 feet of hose.

The pump is right off the crank. I had to replace the lovejoys, which is how I got introduced to the fact they want to sell it. To be honest, If i had more then 3 accounts the first year, I would be stoked! Chem-lawn and Tru-Green are pretty well entrenched around here. I guess I just want to get my feet wet. What do know skid sprayers go for in in the 1-200g range? We have no-one around here that sells that sorta thing. I see them on EBAY sometimes for 1500-2500, but don't know squat about them.
