Building your own site?

OK the girl that was going to build my site can't do it now so I am looking into doing it ourselves. Do any of you guys that have built your own have any suggestions or where and how to's I can go look at or use. I know very little about building a site and can use all the help I can get LOL. What does a web design company usualy charge to build a pretty simple site nothing fancy just one that gets customers attention and will do the job.

Or do you have a web design company you reccomend that built yours and did a good job.

I would check out Squarespace (www.squarespace.com). It's the best do-it-yourself IMHO.
