View Full Version : Controller for blind person?
I have a customer who is blind and wants a controller he can set himself. I tried talking him into an ET controlled clock so we could just set it and forget it but it's a control thing for this guy (somewhat understandably, he wasn't born blind), so I'm looking for something that would work better for him than the traditional RainBird/Hunter offerings, or even something specifically designed fo rthe blind. Anyone have any suggestions?

My blind customer got the RC but alas they are gone. A used mechanical RC would be the best inmo.
Funny, that was the first thing that came to mind for me also, and actually he had one at his last house and said he wished he could get something like that again.

How about setting up a motion sensor in each zone of the yard and hook it to a decent controller. Then, tell him to simply walk out into that zone and hes watering.
Thats not cool.

You should still be able to find a few RCs. Special order, different distributor location, Ebay, craigslist, etc. Wonder if any company could make an audible controller.

How many zones? Try an ebay search. I'll ask around. I used to have a bunch for the oldtimers but no more.

How many zones does the guy have? No reason you couldn't find a used RC clock and fix any flaws.

I guess the same reason a deaf person wants his doorbell to work.

I would look into home automation type systems that interface through a standard desktop computer.

A long long time ago when I worked for an irrigation distributor the manager of the store taught a blind lady how to program a Rain Bird ESP-6. This was the original ESP that was really super simple. She was able to memorize the dial positions and used the ridge on the top of the dial knob to know where the dial was pointing. Of course it did help that she was a very smart lady (I think she had a Ph.D. an taught at the local university) but she was able to keep everything straight in her mind and program he thing with no problems.

I SAY BUY IT. Ship it to DAN. Have him check it out. Then install.

Nice thing about that one is that it has the circuit breaker instead of a fuse.
