Hey guys we don't do irrigation but I was hoping one of you guys could help me out.... is there a formula to find out how many gallons of water would be needed to cover a 26,000 sq ft lawn if you watered with a 1/2 inch of water or 1 inch of water?

Thanks a lot for the help.

I know that 1" will be twice as much as a 1/2". There is a formula on this site somewhere. Try the Thread at the top.

27,000 gallons is about one acre-inch

There is 43,560 sq ft per acre.

It takes 27,154 gallons to cover an acre 1" deep with water. Do the math..

43,560/27,154= 1.604 gallons per sq ft.

1.604 X 26,000 sq ft. = 41,704 gallons for one inch of water per 26,000 sq ft.

20,852 gallons for 1/2" per 26,000 sq ft.

Tri, you got something tweaked a little bit there. Rather than 43560/27154, I believe it would be 27154/43560.

Easiest way to do it is to remember that one cubic foot of water is 7.48 gallons. Round it to 7.5 and you will be close enough. A cubic ft of water will obviously cover 1 sq ft with 12" of water

7.48/12 = .6233 So .6233 gallons per sq ft for the 1" rate.

.6233 x 26000= about 16205 gallons to put down 1" on that property. Cut it in half for 1/2"

Thanks guys, you "dinky pipe" guys made me smile (and I needed that). I round down to 325,000 gal makes an A' :) Or, I just use in my head that 3A' is about 1 million gallons. What that means to me is that a "light" water day is plus or minus one A', and a "heavy" water day is a just short of a million gallons. If it rains one of the next couple of days, I'll get through May on 30A'.
