I guess thermaling only works for certain type's of stone and I believe schist is not one of them. Can anyone offer any info on how to do this?

I dont think heat is the way to go either, maybe a couse grit belt sander or wire wheel if you are gentle and patient, or maybe even a rasp?

thank's. I'll see what the quarry say's tommorow when I call. It say's the will naturalize it for $8 per lin. ft. Just not sure what they do to naturalize it. I hope it's something I can do on my own.

Acetylene torch will work well. Also good masonry tools used properly will shape it rapidly. I have split many tons of schist by hand. $8 per foot sounds like you are paying alot for this detail. Is it a bull nose for a cap or what? The amount of linear feet, site use, and nose detail you want, for me, would dictate the process.
