ok i just had a situation come up where i told the customer that i thought a job would be able to be done for somewhere around 200.00 but i wasn't sure exactly... they told me to go ahead with the work.. after the work was done i figured out how much i was owed and sent them a bill for 283.00 which is what it was all worth at the rate i told them i was going to charge per hour... what is the best way to explain that the price guessed at and the actual price are different?

Tell them that your estimate was off by slightly over 40%.

We usually give a range and give a worse case senario and when they are billed under the amount thay are very happy. If we go over we eat it in which we hardly ever do. Experience and learning the hard way will teach you to never underbid..

And the customer never gets a surprise.

Do you think they will ask you back or give you a referal after the slight overbid ?

EAT IT Chalk it up to a lesson learned.
