puffs smoke out of the carb throat when it fires? sticky valves?
I went through the carb has clean fuel this JD model 60 was in storage for 25 years i also replaced the gas tank fresh plug fresh points and condesor no frayed wires that i can find? how do you set the timing? thanks

That's what it sounds like, The timing is non-adjustable with a flywheel key but could be sheared as well. Do you have ample compression ?

I tore it down today and noticed oil on the bottom of the head so i am gonna put a new head gasket on it tomorrow (could that be the problem? loose head bolts?)
