I've got the CV740 on a Super Z. Several weeks ago it began suddenly stalling. It often would occur just after making a turn. No sputtering, no nothing. Just shut down. Now other times it would surge at anything less than full throttle. Not all the time, but for days at a time.

About ten days ago I replaced all the fuel lines that were starting to crack and put a new oem fuel filter on. It didn't help. Last Thursday the mower shut down in the middle of a lawn. There was a major thunderstorm brewing and I somehow managed to choke it enough to keep it running to get it back to the trailer. Seeing that I was probably done for the day because of rain, I headed to the mower shop and picked up a new carb. The mower ran great, better than it has in a year. It seemed to have more power. Everything seemed perfect.

Yesterday when we finished the last lawn I loaded it on the trailer. I thought I heard a slight sputter. When we finished the lawn I walked back and could smell raw fuel. I looked and there was gas leaking out where the choke lever is. I got to the shop and pulled the air cleaner hose off and gas poured out. I tried to crank it to see if I could get it in the building, but it was locked tight.

If the carb is new, and the filter is new, is it possible that something in the pump is falling apart and ending up in the carb?

Turned out to be a sliver of trash that looked a whole lot like a piece of the blow molded fuel filter casing. It was stuck between the float valve and seat.
