this is completely off topic but maybe you and mr. vice nut could talk about it.
How do the both of you manage to get along at work together? just the way you talk about each other it sounds like you two have a good relationship.
what are the secrets?
look into a zahn yet?

Beautiful as usual Dean! I love the Carolina houses and landscapes. We looked through a bunch when we were in NC and i fell in love. Were going to be moving there one day. 6 months there, and 6 months in texas. Should be fun!

Tornado? What tornado? All we got was some rain?
Great looking job by the way. Prior to laying sod it appears you might have topdressed with a light dusting of topsoil or sand....is that the case?

Builder gives us a budget and we do what we want. Depends on how much we have to make. Our reputation is on the line so we give him as much as we can and still put food on the table:) We do our thing an hope he likes it. He had another landscaper that gave him little bitty stuff and left with a pocket full of money but now he's ours. Has led to alotta business. The top soil and such is our xtra.

Iam glad it works out for you and see you are a smart man nice work. up here the builders do the BARE minimum I have to go to court on 2 builders they used dirt and charged for topsoil and gave them rye and charged for blue grass I got the results from John Deer so the home owners should get some money back but not enough I am glad to see some take pride and are men of their words and contracts keep up the good work

In our neighborhood the landscape budget was $5000, which is about the same in most neighborhoods around here...10 pallets of sod, 2 trees, 2 large shrubs and 3-4 smaller shrubs...no flowers. Privet hedges planted in front of windows, Azaleas planted in full sun...oh and if there are rocks on ground before sod is laid, there will be rocks under sod when finished. Plus/minus 3" for finished sod bed, and who cares if there is only 1 foot of slope in 100 feet and ponding happens in backyard.

Sounds pretty typical for around here, but I'm sure alot of the developments don't even allow 5 grand.
Pres... your work looks awesome as always. It's good to see a company like you have that cares about their reputation, not just how much cash they can cram into their own pockets. Don't get me wrong, I know you make alot of dough... But you deserve it, Noone with the talent you/your company has should ever undersell themselves.

Did you roll that sod? I have seen some guys use small compactors for pavement to roll their Bermuda, I hear it helps the grass take root faster.

Chris, Our budget is double that. I always heard landscape budget should be 10% of the price of the house. This one should have been 70K (I wish)

when i dealt with a few builders i wish they had even a 5000 budget usually the plants are up to the home owner the builder just grades and either seed or sod and they want it do for peanuts. How much would that house sell for about
cgaengineer
06-13-2009, 05:46 AM
Trust me if they could seed the front lawn around here they would in a New York minute, but the county won't let them...as much as I hate to see more govt, I'd like to see requirements for any graded surface to be sodded/seeded and bonded for 2 years so that lazy homeowners would not have dirt backyards.
And 10% landscape budget is what should be done, but like there that would never fly here.

Do you like the rolled sod better than squares? I put out 18 pallets of sod a few weeks ago. It turned out great, but it took a long time using rectangle sod.

Rolls go a lot faster. I prefer squares if I'm helping:)

It will live with a single deep watering...or it does around here, granted it doesn't thrive or look like a golf course but bermuda can grow on just about any surface and just about anywhere. I have seen the builder install sod, water it once or twice and call it finished...around here most houses do not have irrigations as we are in restrictions by June and zero watering by July.

Saw a lady from Hotlanta at dinner. She said they are out of drought restrictions. It was bad here last year but worst for ya'll. We got rain again today:dizzy:. If we lay sod without irrigation it is Bermuda! With this rain it looks Great.

I am watering right now...dragging hoses!! No sense in tearing up lawn to install something you cannot use. Barrow county had some of the worst restrictions last year of any counties due to our small shared lake...neighboring counties that pulled out of the lake were able to water when we could not since they were not in the same level 4 drought.
