I have a 17HP Kohler Command engine, model # CV490S. I just replaced the starter, the old one died. Now when I start it you can hear the starter engage, but the engine will turn slightly and then lockup. About every 4-8 starts it will actually turnover like normal and when it does start it runs for about minute then dies. I have fresh fuel, spark plug, fuel filter, pre/air cleaner, oil and starter solenoid. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Not really enough info to determine but if your old starter was shorted out it may have damaged the contacts in the solenoid.
Try using a voltmeter at the starter or jump directly from a good battery directly to the starter.

My 2 cents

I forgot to mention in my original post, but I also replaced the starter solenoid. What additional info do I need to post?

Some Command engines have adjustable valves, When the valves wear out of adjustment the compression release doesn't function properly thus causing the sames symptoms you described.

Posting the engine spec number located next to or below the model number will tell us if you do have adjustable valves, If so then proper adjustment procedures can be posted.
