hey all, i 've got a fh601v 19hp on my ztr. just noticed (today) the fuel filter barely had any fuel in it while the engine was running... is this normal? never noticed the amount of fuel in the filter before. the engine sputtered going up an incline... that being out of character i got off and looked it over and noticed very little fuel in the filter (noticed movement).

not sure if it's related, but i seem to be smelling raw fuel occasionally (not all the time). what's strange is, i don't see any sign of a leak. also, if you all could let me know best places to look for troubleshooting small engines (especially kawi's), i'd greatly appreciate it. thanks, hope all is well. have a good one.

The fuel filter doesn't have to be full for the engine to run properly.

How steep was this incline ?

Do you notice this fuel smell more on flat surfaces or inclines ?

You found the best place for troubleshooting right here.....

hey resto,

thanks for the reply... i didn't think it had to be full but it was just shy of being empty. as i said i did see "movement" in the filter. what is the chewing tobacco can looking thing attached to the engine shroud connected to the filter and running into the carb? is it a fuel pump?

to answer your questions... the incline was NOT steep and the fuel smell is intermittent. where can i find a diagram and/or manual for this engine (fh601v)?

hope your copying "can't fix stupid" wasn't directed @ me... i'm sure you've heard the only stupid question was the one you were afraid to ask. looking forward to your reply. hope all is well. have a good one.

The snuff can looking thing is the fuel pump. Do you have a problem now? Does it continue to sputter up that incline or was that just a coincidental thing that causes you to question the amount of fuel in your filter.

I have replaced my fuel filter twice. I'm a homeowner and have had my mower now 7 plus years.

Keeping a spare fuel filter and pump with you if you’re a maintenance man is not a bad idea. Another fuel problem often over looked is a bad fuel cap. A bad cap doesn’t let air in the tank and the vacuum eventually builds so much that these simple fuel pumps can't supply fuel. It usually results in the mower sputtering or cutting off like it's out of fuel. You take the cap off and the tank takes in a big breath of air. It's over looked because by removing the cap you have relieved the problem for another couple of hours.

If you still have a problem, good luck. This site is a great resource. Great people too.

hey ru55,

thanks for the reply. thought it was the pump... now i'm trying to figure how it works. not electrical or mechanical (off the engine)... is it vacuum?

no problem (yet)... i'm trying to avoid one. the sputter was uncharacteristic of the machine, which i've had for 5 years with no problems.

still trying to find info on troubleshooting guide and webpage for the kawi fh601v. gotta agree this site's the best. hope all is well. have a good one.

Yes Vacuum, 5 years wow! I don’t know how long these pumps usually last. I'm on my third in 7 years. Florida, lots of mowing, sand trap for a yard. That probably contributes. I actually cleaned the last one I took off and kept it for my spare. It had trash in it. The first one was probably needing a cleaning but I tossed it.
