I am currently looking at the x729 and x749 John Deere tractors, and I have a few questions:

How much can the 3 point hitch lift? I would like to use it for brush cutting, but I don't know if the optional cat 1 hitch could lift a 500+lb brush cutter.

Should I get gas or diesel? The gas model is a 27 hp efi liquid cooled kawasaki engine; the diesel is a 24 hp yanmar. The gas engine has more hp, but I have heard that the diesel would be more powerful. Why, if this is true, is the diesel more powerful?

How well will these tractors hold hills?

Would it be better to upgrade to a compact tractor? The tractor will be used for brush cutting, mowing hills and large properties, and snow removal (driveways).

Upgrade to a larger compact tractor. The x700's are just large garden tractors. Yeah you can add the optional 3 pt and rear pto to them, but they definitely aren't made for it to be used like that day in and day out. Look at a 2000 series Deere, there small compacts but large in power and capability.

A compact tractor would be nice, but I would really like the 4 wheel steer for manuverability.

Honestly, I recommend you choose one or the other. The x700's are just enlarged garden tractors, it would be way more hassle than it's worth trying to work a 4ft brush cutter with one of those things. You can get a 2305 for about 10k, the x749 AWS is going to run you 12.2k. Even for that price you could get a 2320 for slightly more. It's either maneuverability or reliability/capability, and the x700 will have very little of the later.

I think the list capacity on the x700 series 3 pt is only 300-400 lbs... I've got a X720 and like it, but if money was no object, I'd definately have a larger compact tractor. Even the 2305 is a lot bigger than the x700 series, plus you get the 3 pt and rear pto from the factory.
