I am considering buying a new Scotts brand mower. It is a 42" rider with 17.5 hp with hydro drive. It has the Kohler motor.

I need advice about the motor and the mower itself.

Also wanna switch to AMSOIL synthetics...how long should I wait?

Thanks

Try http://www.epinions.com. They have a whole lot of opinions on homeowner mowers there.

I'd wait a while with the synthetic, let the motor break in with a high quality oil and switch after 50 hours or so.

There has been alot of discussion on these on this forum: Gardenweb.com (click on FORUMS, then TRACTORS). They seem to get good reviews for the money. I plan on buying either the Scotts 17.5/42 or the Sabre 17.5/42. Same machine, I may go with the Sabre so I get good service from a local Deere dealer. Make sure you have a "participating Deere dealer" near you before you buy from Home Depot.

I have heard good things, nomatter who you buy from.

Good Luck,
ScottyB.

I have a Scott's 16hp mower. It's WAY under powered. It bogs down easily and I can just forget about mowing if the grass is the least bit damp. I also purchased the bagger and clogs consistently. Unless it's in the dead of summer and hasn't rained in week, the bagger clogs with just the moisture from the grass.

Now for the good news. The Kohler has never failed me in 2 years and the deck heigth adjustment is a breeze.

I'll never buy another riding mower with less than a 20hp. It's worth the extra money.

Good luck.
