Just wanted to share what i picked up from a homeowner last week...Its a 97 model with a 13hp Kawasaki fb460v motor..I got it off craigslist..the guy i bought if from said he owned it for two years after buying it from the original owner...but anyway,he stated that it wouldn't start at all..all it did was make popping sounds out the carb when he sprayed some starting fluid into it...so i took a chance and bought it anyway..it came with the single wheel velke in great shape and grass catcher also in ok shape...cant beat that right..?? the first thing i checked was the fuel lines, sure enough they were all clogged up..cleaned them all out including the carb..after all that i decided to take it over to a buddy of mine who works on small engines all the time...fist thing he said was to pull off the head and take a look at the valves...sure enough the intake valve was stuck !!! not bad either..got it loose with some oil and cleaned the valve and head...I put in a new air filter which was missing...:hammerhead: probably explain why water got into it...put in a fresh plug and wham !! fires right up:cool2: took it out the other day for a cut and it works flawlessly...the picture with the lawn in the backround is the actual cut i made with it..I also had to put a little oil onto the clutch that engages the blades..but works fine..belt are good, sharpened the blades, added fresh gas, greased all the fitting which is another thing he didn't't do :hammerhead::hammerhead: ...right now its sitting on my trailer looking sharp !! waiting for this rain to stop again...

Well worth the money. Just the catcher and the sulkey combined would cost $500 (new). Must have never been cared for very well, but it looks clean overall. Always good to have a back-up mower, or a backyard mower like that.

you dont raise the deck itself but the rear wheels and front bushings on the casters....atleast thats the way it is on hydros....

That's is a great find man, especially for that price. How much did end up spending to repair that problem? I wish I could find a mower just like that!

Only cost me $30.00 total..that for the new air filter and plug...then rest was just time..about 5 hours worth of mostly cleaning the carb, lines and pulling the head off and clearing the stuck intake valve...Im glad i went with my instinct on this one...Thanks

NOt really...takes a few seconds...just involes pulling a pin and adding or removing the spacers on each caster...

gotta remember when you change the spacers on the front casters all you are really doing is altering the pitch of the deck. the proper way is to add or remove spacers to the blades...
Although removing the spacers on the casters will alter the height of the cut, you will be sacrificing cut quality..
great deal. I am always looking for good deals. I'd love to get my hands on a 36" walker GHS for my yard.

so then wouldnt it make sense because when you lower the front of the deck, the blades are still gonna cut the grass toward the front of the deck and do it evenly throughout the entire run..? but you saying every time i need to change cutting hieght, i need to remove the blades each time..? anyone else..?:waving:

The easiest way to make slight adjustments is just to move spacers to the space between the blade and the spindle underneath the deck. If the machine wasn't maintained well there's a chance it doesn't have any.... in which case you wouldn't know they existed.
The deck on that Scag is plenty tall enough to mess with the spacer blades.

If it didn't come with a manual you can view/download them from the scag website.

you are correct that if you lower teh front of the deck the extreme leading edge of the blade will cut the grass lowest when its in the forward most position. but you have to remember that the blade spins in a plane which means the extreme forwards portion of the blade is the lowest cut. Ie when the blade is parallel to the direction of travel. when the blade is perpendicular to travel the height of the cutting edge is different.
Imagine the blade is a Frisbee. when its parallel to the ground all edges are the same height from the ground. now tilt the Frisbee and you can visualize what I'm describing.
Will it be enough to notice. probably not if you are only dropping 1/2-1" but any more you may notice a scalloped cut. or poor cutting/discharge performance form your mower
Its not uncommon for guys in florida to cut St Augustine @ 5-6" indicated on the mower and Bahia @ 2-3" indicated. and that much change in height will result in crappy cuts. if you just change the spacer on the casters.
Have I done it. Yes...again 1/2-1" not a big deal. but anymore I'd add or remove a spacer from the blade.
FWIW scag recommends a minimum of three spacers above the blade. and the owners manual will outline the recommended deck setting (Ie were teh deck bolts to the engine frame) for a given height range., and a 1/4" deck pitch forward is the desired setting for most mowers.
you can go on scags website and down load the owners/.parts manual for free...

Thanks...they are on the mower...i sharpen the blades on a regular....i knew they were there...just never really thought about it like that..makes alot of sense...

Thanks...that is very true...I know i have three spacers between the blade and the deck now on each blade...on one lawn that i do,i started cutting it with one more spacer added to the casters (3) and it does give it nicer, more even looking cut...but on the other hand, when im doing a lawn that looks much better cut lower, say with just one or no spacers on the casters,it cuts it low enough, but i guess you cant really notice an uneven cut and what not because its so low...no.???

WOW! I thought $450 was a steal on the 36" Lesco I just bought...tranny was stuck in third gear...$29.00 part and ten minutes later...I had it fixed. However...the paint is no where as nice as your Scag and I didn't get the bagger or the sulky. I'd say you made out like a bandit...good for you!!!
