I have a 52 in snapper pro and I made a chain striping kit. I still plan to add about 9 more feet of heavier chain and so far the stripes the kit made are much darker then the ones made with the mower alone.

Is your mower a walkbehind? Why the ag tires instead of turf tires? Stripes look good.

nice, but why are some chains longer than the others?

Its a walk behind. The tires were just that way when I bought it, no particular reason, they do tear up wet grass so I wouldn't suggest those tires, just haven't had a reason to change them.

Some of the chains are longer then others because I'm not a perfectionist and don't have a quick method of cutting chain. But I'm adding some more chain and might replace the ones that are too long if I decide I need to.

fyi, a bolt cutter makes a good chain cutter. I keep one handy for just in case I forget the trimmer/blower rack keys at home... I've only cut a couple locks lol.

Really? I am sorry, but normally I don't say negative stuff. However, those stripes need help. A deck that is set up properly should stripe better than that without the help of a stripe attachement.

Its soo funny to see all these stipers and whatnot...my exmark and ferris both seem like they are striping better as they get more hours and the factory placed rubber flaps have both pretty much fallen off and my blades are currently dull and they still leave nice stripes first pass....

I believe my mower is set at about 3 1/4, with the chains on the mower leaves much better stripes. But I'd love some suggestions and ultimately that's why I put up these pictures. I would completly disagree that these stripes look like crap, compared to my area they are just fine if not better then what a lot of others leave. Are they great? no, but as I said I'm looking for suggestions.

For those who are agianst these kits, maybe you don't understand. The mower itself isn't laying down great stripes, so that's why some are looking for an alternative.

I hope I didn't come off wrong in the beginning. I don't typically comment on this type stuff. I am in the Piedmont region of North Carolina. We have a variety of grass. Our grass is, in my opinion more stiffer than Northeren grasses and ours stripes just fine.

Some suggestions include:

1) Add more chains and / or heavier chains.

2) Ditch that and go with a roller instead. I think you said it was a walk behind. Maybe using a Pro Slide would work. They may some nasty stripes.

3) Make sure your mower deck is pitched properly.

Hopefully, the above will help you out.

Thanks,

Matt

Thanks matt, and no worries about before. I'm definitely going to go with some heavier chains, I'll check out the deck and see if I can do anything with that, and if all that still won't produce some nicer stripes then maybe I'll scap it and see what else works, thanks man.

when you say deck pitch could you go into further detail of what that is and how I check it. I'm only sixteen and don't know too much about mowers.

What he means is make sure the deck is not level or pitched to much. You want a deck to be pictched slightly toward the front (about 1/8 to 1/4 of an inch). Decks cut best when pitched so that only the front edge of the mower blade is doing the cutting not the edge in the back of the deck at the time.

Why is everyone so mean on this forum? Its just chains for crying out loud. If it works for the man then so be it.

Yeah honestly, it was just a little experiment, I wanted thicker stripes and decided to try some chain since others have had success with it, I don't have the money for a big league roller nor do I care enough to dish out 300 bucks.

Hey..looks good but you should just try using a rubber mud flap if you dont get and better results....works great and it's very light...heres a pic...

But with the chain if he gets stuck he has a good anchor point for a tow hook.

The chains work just fine. As a matter of fact, they work better than rollers in many aspects. I have hundreds of dollars invested in rollers on Lazers. If i was to do it again, - it would be with chains. To all the nay sayers and negative people on here, there is a member here who's mowing and stripes puts ALL members here to shame. What did he use for his stripes?........Chains.

Runner,

I am aware of Eric's work. His setup with chains on a Dixie Chopper are first class. I never said a chain will not give great stripes. I recommended more, and heavier chains.

Well,...I'm with you on that. A little bit longer would help. you need to go as long as possible without the possibility of them getting rolled over in reverse.

so today i lifted the blades up to 3 1/2 inches and noticed the stripes were much better already. ( I also checked and found out the deck was pitched just fine)

Here are the pictures, the plan is to add another about 14 more feet of the heaviest chain I find, probably 5/8 chain.

(By the way these look a lot darker in real life the photos seem to take away a lot)

I'll upload some more pictures once I add more chain.
