So in memory of Eric "ELM" Erickson lets get those stripe pics up and showing.

Here is one from 3 weeks ago. I will have many more to come.

Just love looking at those stripes, so professional. We run 2 Scags, 52" and 61". Does anyone know how to get stripes to work on them? Would appreciate any advice as I love stripes.
As always thanks for the help.

My 48" SCAG stripes just fine. I've heard that they don't do it as good as others, but mine never had a problem. Once I get my Digital Camera fixed, I'll post a few.

I am particularily proud of this one. We used chains, doubles, & perfect mowing pattern. Notice how they line up.

Has anybody else noticed that with a high lift on bottom and a gator magnum on top your machine stripes better. I couldn't believe it. I think it is from the incresed suction adding to the 1/4"
difference between front and back.

Are you sure you posted the correct pic. Looks as if Joe Blow Homeowner put down the fertilizer with a drop spreader after a 12 pack of cold beverages.

I had a helper last year, who seemingly found the perfect way to get some really noticeable stripes (I freaked, but the customer loved it) Had the height on the left side at 2.0" and on the right at 2.5... The lines stood out more than anything I've ever seen...

Playing around later in the season, used a set of calipers to measure some old worn wheels, got two that were exactly 1/8" worn down, and two brand new ones. Not as pronounced an effect, but almost all the customers loved it (the two that would have prefered to have been cut with a flymow). Not one caught on that the height was different (I noticed and it drove me nuts, but the customers liked it, which was more important I guess) Don't plan on doing that again, but it was an interesting experiment!

Maybe its just me, but those chains dangling from the back scare me! Whats to keep them from ending up coming in contact with the blade (My helpers usually pull back a foot or so before a pass after turning around to make sure their lines are perfectly straight)? I suppose you could use break-away chain (the non-welded link type that is used on chainhoists for overhead doors) But then you'd risk seeing links flying across the yard!

Adding a drum adds some serious weight... Ick! I have to push that mower...

What other options are there?

Andy

Obviously the untrained eye cannot see the skill involved in creating the "lawn art" posted above. You will notice Mr. TurfKing how the stripes perfectly line-up from one side of the walkway to the other, the subtle bending of the grass blades, & the way the definition flows with calming carefree abandon.
I have seen people stop their cars, & neighbors gather around this lawn for a closer look. Unfortunately a novice such as yourself cannot appreciate the finer details and hard work that goes into creating such a masterpiece.

:D toby - I think the stripes are great, however you must realize I grew up in western South Dakota where we mowed buffalo grass. Only had to mow 2 times a year since we only got 2 rains. It rained once before you needed it, and once after it was too late. Yup! looks just like the cow paths in our pastures.

Hey FATHERAND SON, I have a 52" scag superzand it stripes great. No one around here has or probably knows about striping kits. Even i'm not too sure about them or what they look like BUT I do know that stripeing makes the yard look great and kit or no kit as long as it's straight your doing something right. More pics tomorrow...It rained today

So......OK.....it looks to me as if the lighter parts of your "stripes" are dead? Is that a correct assumption? Is this a bad case of uneducated fertilizing? That grass looks burnt. Your lines do line up from one side of the walk to the other, I won't take that away from you. Correct me if I am wrong.

These were done on 'common yards' with my 32" Toro 8hp rear engine rider, single blade, with my homemade full lenght deck roller that supports the whole deck's weight (which isn't alot on this small of a mower). The grass just now started growing fast here in Southern IN. We've already had alot of rain, and more is in the forecast!

Yeah it look's like toby (could be casey) has us all beat.

CTLGM, a striping kit is something that is behind the deck that bends the grass over a little more to get darker stripes.

I have found it does take some skill to stripe without one and presently don't use any.

I have some more pics to load from the camera and will get them up soon.

Some of them came out quite dark... But it is a really nice lawn except for the bumps... Kinda stinks knowing this lawn will be totaly ripped up come june for a major expansion project. The front has to be for a bigger septic system & more pews. the back parking lot will become a gym, kitchen, locker rooms, showers, stage, class rooms, etc... The back lawn will be the new parking lot. :) takes me about 3hrs now for everything in the end prolly only 1hr. best of all thay said I will still get payed the same... :)

I have a 60" Exmark Lazer with a striping roller on it.

As far as how long did it take to learn to stripe, The only way to answer that is that I work on it every day. I have been using commercial mowers for 11 years now (6 years with Lazers) and I still work on it always.

Lawngodfather,

Your stripes look good. You say you don't have a roller, right? What type blades do you have on your Lazer, and what is the pitch of your deck? Also how high are you cutting? I just bought a new Lazer 25/60, and the deck is set with the front about 1/4 inch lower than the rear. I planned on mowing at 3 inches.

Thanks

I saw how to do lawn stripes on erics site in the winter & couldn't wait to build my own stripe kit. It's made from 14 pcs of 12 inch long chain on a threaded rod hanging off the back of my trusty craftsman 38 inch deck, which has given me 12 years of service. Eric was definately a person commited to quality lawn care and innovation. This is my first attempt at following his footsteps....

Nick

The key is sharp blades, 1/4" deck pitch (no more), doubles, and qaulity of the grass. The kit does help hide the lines were the blades meet, but I have tried it with out the kit and with single blades. Doubles make the biggest difference.

FrankenScagMachines
05-02-2002, 08:30 PM
Here's some I did today on my lawn with my 1993 Wheel Horse 520H garden tractor (hydro 20hp twin Onan) and 48" 3 blade side discharge deck. It has a full floating deck and plenty of rollers as well as 23x10.50x12 Dico Turf Trac R/S tires on rear and same tread on front, but it doesn't stripe this good by itself. I pulled one of those brush type ground driven sweepers behind it and the brush picked up a tad of grass leftover from the deck, but mainly used the brush to knock the grass down for striping. I haven't built a kit for this mower yet. Soon I will though. Just haven't got time! This is common yard grass (type unknown) and looks better than my neighbor's who puts down 120lbs fert. for just 1/2 acre and he cuts at 2". I cut at 3" and I don't put anything on it, no seeding, no fert, nothing. Plus my mowing/striping technique really improves it. This took all afternoon for two acres, but I double cut most of it. I really enjoyed doing this.....LOL.
Mowing is my hobby- Striping is my obcession!

Sorry to be a party pooper but all of those striped lawns looked really bad. Perhaps this thread is a joke in that you guys picked out the worst photos you could find. As I have said before, wheel marks and stripes look bad and hurt the commercial lawn mowing industry. Who wants a beautiful lawn that looks like it has been repeatedly run over by a truck?

Those lines can be done in one pass and are not harmful to the turf!!!

So tell us how it hurts the industry cause we are dumbfounded, and have abosolutly no clue to what you mean.

Hi Lawngodfather! I was looking at the pictures posted on this thread. While I know that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I also know ugly when I see it. It is a shame that some (certainly not all) commercial mowing companies sell the stripes as a desirable feature. Of course, if a customer desires stripes then give them. My concern is that you should be able to properly mow grass without leaving "evidence" that a giant truck or tractor has matted the grass blades down. I'll admit that the grass recovers within a day or two but why put it through the stress (unless the owner likes it)? The answer is of course that most (not all) commercial mowers and some (not all) residential mowers leave wheel marks and stripes. In my opinion once a lawn is cut you should see a natural landscape with little or no evidence that a mower cut the grass. Just my $0.02. Didn't mean to offend you or anyone else.

James234 that "evidence" is what makes the pros stand out more.

Also around here the scaping is desinged for lawns to look like these pics.

But I do also know that your reagon is not the same as ours.

So I do see your point now.

Also the stress only has to be watched when the guys who mow dormants lawns here do so when they are stressed, cause we don't mow stressed lawns.

James,

You said "I'll admit that the grass recovers within a day or two but why put it through the stress". My question is what do you suggest? If you put a large mower on the grass the weight of the mower is the same, regardless if a stripe is left or not.

The only way I have found not to stripe cool season grasses that are mowed at higher settings is to overlap my deck. When you overlap you are then waisting time and riding the mower across the turf even more.

Ahhhh...now I get it!

All those sports fields and golf courses that my customers "ooh and ahh" over are being run over with trucks! And all this time I thought they were using reel mowers and rollers.....

Man, I gotta ditch the Lazer and get me a heavier truck. :D

BRIMOW525

Althought I think James234 is taking in some bad exhaust fumes from that old truck... I kinda see where he might think its bad to stripe. We have alot of companies around here that cut it in the same direction from spring to fall. YES that is wrong ... BUT striping in hole is no any worse on the grass then .....putting a wide but heavier machine on the lawn. Or even more brilliant... drive around in circles and run over the ends of the lawn 50 millon times when trying to get all the u missed. Sorry dude but striping doesn't hurt the industry. I only hurt scrubs that can't or don't have the equipment to stripe. "And thats all I have to say about that" ( Forest Gump)

if im not mistaken someone asked a while back, before somebody ran over our party with a truck, about a striping kit. i personally have a piece of that angle that is used to hang garage doors (got a bunch of holes in it) with 16 10" pieces of 5/16" chain bolted in it. the whole thing is mounted under the skid plate on the wheel motors. it does wonderfully! hope to put on some pics soon.

I enjoyed looking at all of the pictures. I noticed that some of you guys would have your stripes to go in a circle around obstacles such as trees. Others would resume there stripes on the other side of the tree. In fact they'd give the appearance that they drove through the tree (incredible). How is this done. Aother question that I have is if you're using a lawn/garden tractor how do you maneuver at the end of the row? Please keep in mind that this thing does not have zero turn.

FrankenScagMachines

jayandlo -
The way I do it with a garden tractor or other non zero turn rider is usually like this: at the end of a row, I turn to one side (in the area I outlined about 2 laps to start with) then back up and turn into the next row making sure to keep it lined up straight so's not to get a crooked row. Another way is to outline the area 3 or 4 laps and just do a loop turn at the end of each row. This is alittle quicker and easier in most cases but is not for the picky person's lawn as going around the perimeter of the property and doing loop turns is going to make the edges look wacked up. Sometimes on some places I drive along the edge to a designated place to turn around at. This I know is somewhat stressful to the grass and wasteful of time but you don't always have room to turn around at the end of a row. This is how I have figured out to do it.
Any more questions? I'd be glad to help.
Happy Mowing (striping!),
Eric

Thanks,

Jayandlo - I've been trying to think of a way to explain how we drive through trees. I know how to do it but I guess it's so natural for me and I never stopped to think about it so it's hard to know how to word it. Maybe I will take some pictures to help explain it because you know a pic is worth 1k words! Or I might make illustrations on the computer, or both.

The only problem I have with striping is that while having a fixed deck mower it gets to be a pain to raise and lower the cut depending on the yard. I was trying to leave the mower at one height 3 1/4" which striped fescue and even my thick bermuda in the back yard quite well but it wasn't cutting low enough for my other yards to look good at all, not to mention 4 days later it had to be cut again. These other yards are as much clover and bermuda, and johnson grass as anything and since the customers 1. Don't want to fert or overseed and 2. are paying a lot more than what the account is worth I'm OK with it.
If I were doing this fulltime I would probably be trying to have mostly yards that want a full year round plan (which would include fert and seed) but as I am doing it for the same reason as most part timers (Love It, Xtra income) I'm about to give up on trying to convince these few accounts to step up to a better system of maintaining their lawns.
So I guess I'll have the only striped yard on my street.

lgf, do you stripe all your lawns or do you charge extra?

PaulJ
06-29-2002, 03:35 PM
All these stripes look great. I'll try to get some of my pics later.
I don't think I could mow without leaving some sort of stripe. For me I don't set out to "stripe" a lawn but to mow it in a Quality way.

the stripes are a nice side effect. I always mow the whole proporty (or as much as possible) in the same dirrection. I change dirrection each week trying toi get 3 or 4 weeks before I go that way again. I outline 2 or 3 tiems with my 36" at the start of the yard. I even try to not be going the same dirrection each week when outlining. I try not to do commplete circles around trees but I make an X on each side. This is hard to explain but I'll try. When aprouchi8ng a tre or polewith the uncut grass to the right and the tree still to the right I will go around the right side of the tree leaving some uncut grass on it's left side (less than the deck width), then when comming back oon the next stripe I do the same thing thus mowing that uncut patch and crossing over the stripes before and after the tree so the stripes look like a X and Often no trimming is even needed and I don't have to slow down a bit. I hope this makes some sence?

I'm using a 36" lesco WB, gear drive with Jungle wheels. and now Double blades.
I don't think I could mow a lawn and not stripe it unless I just went in circles.

They're looking great guys!
LGF- that grass is incredibly dark! Too dark for me. Also that bank is very impressively steep... I guess it's probably not as bad as it looks, or it might be even worse than it looks, for we have a big hill that isn't all that steep, but it has a real steep part of it, and it doesn't look that bad from a distance but it's very very steep when you're on it. I always take that steepest part very slow (going down) but there is no grass growing where the tires go because you slide even with a 1,000 lb garden tractor (turf tires). This is w/o locking up the wheels, they are still going slow and it just slides. How's that bank in your pic for mowing? I don't think I'd want a rider on it unless I was real sure of myself and mower first.

That actually came about cause I needed a different direction to mow and its such a narrow long area that there was no way I was going to go the short way, diaginals would have worked too but I thought what the heck. To tell you the truth I was getting a little bored with straight lines about the 20th week this year so I started doing things different. Of course I started out on only a select few lawns. This guy is my welder, we exchange services and he has told me many times he could care less how its cut as long as he does not have to do it. The bullseye was done on a customers lawn that does not live there. She moved out to the East coast 2 years ago and has not sold her house. Its in the back yard and none of the neighbors can see it. I have got only good feedback so far on my trials. Seems everyone is up for some change.
