For the most part I work solo and get a helper here and there to keep me from working every weekend and when extra work requires an extra hand.
My wife only works 4 days a week. Recently she has decided to help me so we don't have to pay outfor a worker. She has helped me do couple small planting, mulching jobs and wants to start running the mower for me one day a week. She has been practicing on the mower and today we had our first maint day with her mowing. She is actually better than others. I love the idea of saving the money and it gives us time together as we usually are tied up so much with work, kids, ect. Has anyone else made this work well. I know she is tough but I don't want her to get beat up out in this industry all the time.

My wife has worked with us a few times. Just take it for what it is. You cant fire your wife. In general women have proven to me to be more concerned about doing the job carefully and properly than a man of the same skill level. Unfortunetly the tables turn when it comes to heavy grunt work. Please no grief just a generalization. I love when my wife comes to work, but not because she is ultra productive, but because we get to spend time together. Otherwise its limited to a few hours here and there during the season. As far as mowing my wife has no interest, but Ive worked with women on a mow crew and they are no different than any man except maybe when you need to muscle a mower around.

They key to any successful business is the phone. My wife works the office monday through Wed.
Thurs and Friday is spent running picking up supplies and helping outside of the office.
Been doing it this way since 1992. The volume we do in business blows peoples minds away and they wonder and ask so many questions.
We grossed over $600k last year with only one other guy to help 2 days of the week to give us the weekends off. Our net profit was 58%.
So to answer your question, yes I know of many wifes that actually quit their day jobs to work the husbands business.

We are a ma and pa operation, retired 4 years ago and started business
to keep in shape and earn some extra loot...
My wife is a big help, she won't touch the ztr LOL, but she uses the 22" push
mower to go around obstacles and bulk heads which save me a lot of time..
I do a lot of brush-hog jobs that she does not have to go along on, this really
upsets her, because of my age she wants to be there in case i have any problems..
Our business has grown by leaps and bounds, we do not take on much residential
because of the trimming, edgeing etc..
We have been married for 47 years and allways have done everything together and
our business is no exception, probably only going to do this for a couple of more
years but it will be me and her until we quit LOL..

My wife has helped in the biz since our start in '93. This past 2years I've been in need of a hip replacement so, my wife has had to become more involved. We've had insurance issues so the hip is only soon to happen.
Anyhow, she's done VERY well. We were blessed this year w/ an excellent helper who doesn't mind taking orders from a woman. It also helps that I'm still there to "tutor" along until I'm back into full production mode.
I work w/ her-she works with me and I think if I were completely out of the picture she could do it ALL by herself if she had to. We've worked the past 3 weeks w/ only 1 day off and we haven't said the word "divorce" yet. The 24th of June was our 20th Anniversary. The day after we said "happy anniversary" to each other and went to work -together. So the answer is "yes" your wife can work w/ you in a successful business as long as you respect each other and try not to disagree to much in front of your employees:laugh:

Gus, my question was about my wife working with me, not to start a fuss about someones income. I really appreciate the input from some. It is not an option for her to only do the office work, we have to have insurance and the other income at this point. That would be my dream. I guess my biggest fear is having to tell what and how to do things because she is not experienced in the business. I feel like I have tip toe around details to make sure she doesn't feel like I am talking down to her. It's not like some flunkie I don't have to go home with
I have to say she hung tough today. i had gotten way behind this week on some commercial accounts and she helped today. Heat index around 102-108 today and she didn't back down.
