I am looking for my next edger i have used stihl and echo in the past.I was just shopping around and want some honest opinions on what you guys like or dislike and y?I am looking at stihl and echo agian but want to know if i will get better performance and reliability from another brand?I am currently looking into shindaiwa, tanaka, maruyama, kawasaki, and even the 4-stoke honda. The honda however is a bit on the heavy side.

try the shindiawa, you will probably like it. The 260 motor is really nice. Good combination of light weight, power, and reliability.

We have always used John Deere E-35 walk behind edgers. They went out of production a couple years ago and can not be found. Just picked up our first "Stick Edger" yesterday and the guys are trying to get used to it. The two that have used it the most say they like it. Of course it is REDMAX! We demoed echo before and they hated it. (no power) The redmax has plenty.

The Stihl straight shaft edger is great, lots of power and will cut through anything.

The new Stihl FC85 stick edger is the best out there. Its designed to not clogged. The gear box wheel makes it even easier to use. A stick edger with 2 wheels is very nice. No matter how bad the edging is, I've never had it choke down.

This is a bit off topic but has anyone looked at the peco mower mounted z-trimmer/edger? at www.lawnvac.com I doubt it would be a replacement for a disc type edger but I've never seen one work.

I just purchased a Stihl FC85 Stick Edger and only used it once for about an hour. I noticed upon completion that there was some oil residue in the front where engine attaches to the shaft (around the vented portion) and also on the bottom side. I also noticed this oil on the display model the dealer had. Is this normal? What can be causing this?

Has anyone else experienced this?

I have a Husqvarna string trimmer and the trimmer never has any oil residue anywhere?

Any help will be appreciated.

It seems the only oil you should see would have to come from the exhaust area, if it's running a little too rich. I have that edger, (about a year old) and have never had any kind of oil leak from anywhere on it. I have to say, this condition certainly wouldn't be "normal" under ANY circumstances. Look carefully and see if maybe the oil isn't dripping from the exhaust area. If it is, then you're fine.

another vote for the FC-85. i have had mine for a month now and love it like all of my other Stihl stuff. if your dealer carries a four edge blade i HIGHLY recommend getting it as it will tear thru just about anything you touch it with. hoss turned me on to this and can back this statement up!

I WOULD also like to mention that if you don't have an edger, I would HIGHLY recommend a wheeled edger as your first. The reason being, is that while stickedgers such as the Stihl FC85 are excellent units, they are just way too labor intensive for doing larger initial edge jobs. If you have a corner lot, that has not been done in a while, this edger will wear you out by gripping it and having to keep it pushed down into the edge. I've found myself struggling with this thing, and then asked myself. "What in the world am I thinking?" I then went to the trailer, grabbed my McClane, and completed the rest (majority) of the job with the ease and comfort of my fingertips to hold the handles. Stickedgers ARE great to grab real quick and keep edges cleaned out with, though. Oh yeah, they'll DO initial edging, but not as easily and fast as a good wheeled edger. Let me emphasize that... a GOOD wheeled edger - not like a Craftsman, or something.

Stihl FC85. It is a great edger. What was said by Runner is true. If you want ease of operation on INITIAL edge jobs, get a wheeled edger. But, since you do initial edging once and maintenance edging on a regular basis, I just tuff it out on the initial task and get great performance out of the FC85. Unless you can afford both, just get an FC85. In St.Louis, one goes for around $350.

I was just told I will be in the August 2002 edition of TURF Magazine. I wrote about my Stihl FC-85 Edger for the "Talkin 'Bout My Gear" column. It should have a photo or 2 that shows the edger. Be sure to look for it in August issue of "TURF"! But don't look for my mug shot, I left that out to spare the magazine!! :p

You might want to look into Byho one wheeled lawn edgers imagine the ease of a stick edger w/ the power of a wheeled edger they offer a 3.5 b&s or a 2.5 honda. I'm adding one to the truck next season.

chalk up another vote for the stihl FC85. I love mine. super fast and i have yet to stop it doing a first edge or a problem yard (my own :D ) Price should be around 350 and is worth every penny. I haven't got the star blades yet for mine but from what i hear don't run it without them.

Oh and don't use an impact to try to remove and install the blades quickly. blade bolt isn't a high grade one. I broke mine yesterday changing the blade. Time for another trip to store.

I got a FC85 last week and have to agree with the other posts that this is the best edger I have ever used, bar none.
