I am new to this forum, so please bear with me.

I am in the market for a new mower, most likely a zero turn. I have about 3 acres of slightly sloped yard to mow. I do not want to spend all day mowing it either. I have been looking into ZTRs with a 60 inch deck. Some models I am looking at:

Dixie Chopper Classic
Kubota-Diesel
Deere 520A
Exmark - not sure the model
Scag
and a few others

Price is somewhat of an issue, but I would pay more for a better cut and machine. I will not be using it commercially and only mowing my yard once or twice a week.

Any help would be great. The reason I am looking for some opinions is that there is a big difference in price, 10,000 vs. Deere ($7,000) and my question is will the $3,000 difference make that much of a difference in the cut and long term service.

Thanks for any guidance.:rolleyes::weightlifter::cool2:

I dont see many commercial guys around here mowing with JD's. It's mostly Exmark and Toro.

Get the 'bota diesel. Mow knee high grass at 12 mph and burn half a gallon of fuel per acre. Be sure to stay on the maintenance cycle, diesels are super picky.
Good luck!

Thanks for the replies. Does the weight of the Kubota diesel make any difference on my lawn? It's almost 500 lbs more than the Deere.

First look who you have as a local dealer. The initial purchase is important but not nearly as important as the ability to get parts and quality service.
We have run Toro, Exmark, Walker and Simplicity. All have positives and only a few "wishes".
If you only need this machine for mowing get the Zero Turn. If you are only cutting your own 3 acre lawn save the cash. You have no need for a diesel machine.
Try not to get caught up in the "this machine goes faster" mentality. Rarely will you want/ be able to mow at top speed.
Lastly you want to be comfortable on your machine. If you can upgrade the seat or get a better suspension focus there. -SL

Diesel blows gas away. A gas machine will need more service, more parts and will use much more fuel! Diesel torque leaves gasoline in the dust!

This is the best advice ... since you're only going to be using it for your own property you don't need diesel, it's a waste of money !! To mow 3 acres with a ZTR will be what you want.

My suggestion would be to look into the entry level commercial machines ... Snapper PRO has the S50x model and Dixon has a RAM 50 model and both go for about $ 5,000 ... good luck.

If you decide to move or sell the machine down the road, say 1000 hours on the machine, you will get some serious cash back on the diesel, very little on the gas. Gas sucks, i own gas equipment as well as diesel & 9 times out of 10, its the gas machine that lets you down!
