Hey I recently bought a new Bad Boy mower with a 28 hp Cat liquid cooled for my business. I am having a hard time finding anything on how to do regular service on the engine (oil change, air filter, coolant etc.) Just wondering if anyone here knew how to get a manual for that. Thanks.

the last time i checked they didnt have a manual for common sense.

1) how to change the oil? pull the plug

2) how to change the filters? remove old install new

3) coolant change? pull a clamp and drain, refill.

I know how to change oil and coolant but if you don't know what kind to use you're kinda stuck...

Call your local Cat dealer and have the serial # of the engine they will send you a manual.

I bought a Bad Boy 72" with 35hp Cat in 2007. The dealer I got mine from gave a little white piece of paper with all the other paperwork that stated what fluids to use, etc. I called him about the oil just to make sure. I used Rotella 15W 40 just like I do in my diesel trucks. I never had to change my coolant, but it's just regular half and half antifreeze and water I believe. Check on the coolant, just to make sure. I know the oil is correct.

Hey, just call the factory and ask for parts, tell them you didn't get an engine manual with your mower, and they will send one out to you. For some reason cat doesn't want the owners to have the actual manuals, so BB is sending out copied pages out of the book that give us all the info we need, I am surprised your packet didn't have one in it, but you might have got one not built recently.

I bought two new Scag TT's with 28 HP Cats. Got an owners manual from Scag and from Cat. Sounds like poor customer care on Bad Boy's part to me.

I wouldn't say it's poor customer care. Bad Boy is the ONLY mower company I have ever been able to call and actually talk to a real person within 5 min. your question is answered and you're off the phone. Plus the guy I bought it from is prob. the one that forgot to give it to me.

Right you are, however I wasn't referencing the company, more to the point your dealer.

Example: I have any problems with any of my Scags (own 4), problems are rare but do occur, my dealer will actually rob a part off of a brand new machine in order to have us running ASAP. Dealer I had before would pussy step around doing such a thing and we would end up waiting for an ordered part. Can you guess why he is referred to as dealer I had before?? He didn't get it, and didn't understand how much growth I have expeienced. His lack of attention not only cost him in additional mower sales for this year but for future years and continued growth (on my end) as well.

On second thought lets look at it this way, say you buy a brand new pizza oven from say Sears. Question: Did you get instructions with it or not?

I would gladly take the $4000 or so saved on each unit, and wouldn't mind having to say "hey man, you forgot to throw my owners manual in the packet" any day....lol. It would have almost been 'buy two get one free day' if you would have bought 2 Bad Boys. "oh woops I forgot your manual, here is a free mower...lol"

I have to agree, it does depend on what dealer you have in your area. My local dealer is so big and so understaffed that they don't get to stuff very fast (hence the reason I went out and bought a mower they don't carry :D ) but Scags are nice mowers but I can't afford a top of the line scag so I went with a bad boy and love it!

I'm not knocking the bad boy product Gents. Just find it odd that a dealer wouldn't ensure that an owners manual goes out with each and every product. Handheld to Mowers. JMO, but seems a poor business practice and easy way to lose repeat business by dropping the ball on something so simple.

Agreed, hey Easel is it true that Scags are very stable on hills? I know my bobcat is very stable but I just wanted to know about the Scags for future reference.

Scag will be the most stable machine you can put on a hill/slope IMHO. I generally have guys use the walkbehind on some hills/slopes in order to avoid rutting. Have had the TT's on some pretty good hills though.

Congrats On the new AOS diesel 28hp Cat, I have your big brother the AOS 35hp Cat:). Hey come back & start a thread on the BB AOS 28hp Cat diesel, so much unknown on this BB set-up curious minds, and the BB "haters" need to get educated. These are Perk-A-Piller diesels, Cat purchased Perkins diesel. You should not have to change your oil for 500 hours, I would draw a UOA used oil anyalsis off at about 100hours. You can get the UOA sample kits from AMSOIL or Blackstone Lab.

I would keep an eye on the engine coolent, you might evaporate some coolant off during the early hours of use. I carry about 2 gallons of engine coolant, heck the Kubota M6800 will evaporate coolant in heavy bush-hogging & high ambient temps here in the south.

DO NOT USE Rotella T might as well add some straight Parafin wax to the oil:waving::laugh: I would reccomend Valvoline Premium blue 15w-40, Ashland oil company is privately owned, and purchase's base stock like AMSOIL from the BEST supplier. The top of the line Synthetic oil or for the absolute best protection, performance & peace of mind I would use Amsoil AME 15w-40 12TBN heavy duty marine diesel & gas engine oil.

I did not get my engine manual either with my cat diesel, NOT A BIG DEAL, since you need/should call the local Cat dealer to register the Cat engine, plus you get to know the Cat guys, and I got one mailed from them too. I would not call it poor service since Bad Boy mailed me the actual Cat manual, upon my request and again, I then got a second manual from the local "Cat House". Cat paints their engine blocks yellow for a reason, to detect tampering. Also the local Cat service manager said the Cat holds all engine manuals under lock & key, and computer access to manuals is password protected, and employee's will & have been fired for trying to "boot-legg" Cat manuals.

Also your local Cat dealer will give you excellent service period, and will have the OEM oil filters & oil should you want to stick with exact CAT OEM products. Cat is proud of their equipment & engine's:drinkup: not matter the size or cost from the Cat diesel.:)

Enjoy your 6,000 hour diesel engine:dizzy::laugh:

And just for Shats & grins I ended up with 3 Cat C1.6 manuals when it was done talking to everyone.

Hey Sparky, no offense but you need to re read my last post, pay particular attention to the part where I say "I'm not knocking bad boy mowers"

The part I boldened and underlined in quoteing your post is yet another example of poor dealer service IMO. Note I said dealer, not Cat. Every piece of equipment I purchase, mowers to the Echo handhelds is registered by the dealer at the dealer as a convenience to me. Thats called service Sparky, and thats exactly how I treat my clients, and that my friend spurs success.

hey you should do a review on your tt diesels like a long term test review! not to many people have them cause they cost alot! and from what i know they are probly one of the best most fuel conservative diesels ther are!

yeah for oil just make sure its cj-4 diesel certified or whatnot...

also for lawn mowers... for the 2-4 quarts it probably uses, id just get sythetic "diesel truck" oil and run that all summer.

BB recommends 10w30 while most everyone else I know recommends 15w40 diesel oil. Either way, does anyone know how many quarts I need to change the oil and filter.
Thanks in advance....

I used Amsoils 5w-40 diesel oil in mine. Works great, I'm thinking mine took around 4 qts? If you call BB they could tell you.

You'll love the CAT diesel. I have the 35hp version BB with 60" deck, I cannot be more pleased with the mower, next year I'm trading my Lightning Z 26 hp Kawasaki in on the 28hp Compact diesel. The additional torque of the diesel is unbelievable. We did shatter a anti-scalp wheel last Friday afternoon hitting a curb (same ones everyone else uses) called Bad Boy on Monday morning to save an hour trip to the dealer and had one on my doorstep Tuesday, cannot beat their service in my opinion. If we need antifreeze we just plan on using the pre-mixed Prestone as for oil filters we go to our local parts store and get Wix's best grade of filter, we use them on all our farm equipment and diesel trucks as well. We plan on running Rotella synthetic in our CAT. As far as people bitching about stability on hills we have had no issues, even with our Lightning, we've replaced lawn services on jobs that would not mow right of ways due to the sharp angle, we have had no issues, we have used Deere, Kubota and Gravely and don't see any difference as far as stability. There are many good machines on the market, Exmark, Hustler, Scag, Deere, Kubota, Gravely, it just my opinion that BB is just as much mower and in many cases 2500-3000 thousand less. They make look spartan but the ease of serviceability is second to none. Easy access to all lube points, filters, hydraulic tank it's a great benefit to the mower.
You break down the components and all brands pretty much use the same pumps, drive motors, etc. In many cases you are just paying additional for the color of paint. Cut quality has alot to do with the operator, the way the deck is set up, the sharpness of blades, etc. We just took over a large school district with three campuses, the baseball coach is just raving about how much better his baseball field looks. The previous contractor was using a Exmark and a Grasshopper, he should have had just as good as cut as we do, he must must have either been going to fast or his blades may not have been sharpened as frequently as we do. There is no logical reason why our cut would be any better, except we take our time on the ball field to make sure it looks great. We have been using around 2.5 to 2.6 gallons for between 3.5 to 4 hours of mowing time on the 35 hp diesel.
