Been lookin around this forumn alot and I love it. You guys have some amazing insight to this business. I am only 22 and have only just started my business in the last year, but been working in the industry for quite a while. I am mainly in the lawn care and landscape side of it but I do have a question for you guys that do more of the excavation and hauling.

One of my commercial lawn care clients is a construction company. The owner asked me the other day if I would like to get into hauling some dirt off for him. He does mainly home additions. The first job possiblity would be later this comming week. The first one is about 5 to 6 yards of dirt not too much at all. I have a gmc 3500 with a 9 foot contractor dump on it. So i am figuring mosty likely two loads. It is just a back up to the pile and he will load with his mini ex kinda job. I then will have to haul it about 12 miles back to his shop and dump no pushing or anything. My questions is for some of you that haul all the time what is the best way to price. Should I give him my hourly rate and just charge that or should I charge a by the mile price or is a combination of the two the best. What works best for you guys???

I get $55 per hour for my tonner dumps. So hourly is my vote.

A 24 mile round trip, with load and dump. Should take about an hour to an hour fifteen depending on traffic.

Hourly for sure, that's how most materials trucking is invoiced.

I think I would go hourly with him.........If you have to sit and wait, it is still billable time. If you did it by the load, there is no motivation on his part to take care of you quickly - you may be sitting longer waiting for someone to get off the phone or come from another job or something........try it hourly to begin with and modify from there if need be.....

Ya thanks for the response. I think Hourly is how I am going to try it first. This guy is a real talker I can never get out of there some times. Hopefully this works out this could be a ton of potential work and really help me get going in this area of work.
