I think this company has some ideas about it. http://www.harmonyponds.com/whatwedo/residential/b-2-e/asian1.htm
Is that the name for the carefully raked stone gardens of the East?

I usually associate a zen garden with a japanese garden, designed to make use of limited space.
If this is what you're looking for, there's a little book that I found to be useful in design (though unfortunately, I rarely get to implement the ideas there).
It's by Ortho, and called "Creating Japanese Gardens" isbn # 0-89721-148-0
It includes lots of pictures, theory on material choice and placement.

Yes it is the carfully raked garden. The customer explained to me today that it is made with crushed granite which represents water and there should be some large stones placed in to represent islands.
This should be interesting.

If you pick up that Ortho book it'll tell you all about the stones you need to place, their relative sizes and shapes, and their meanings (reclining ox, turtle, etc). Make a run to Barnes and Noble tonight. You'll have what you need to know by tomorrow.

Thanks, I'll have to check out that book.
