How do you estimate putting in large areas of river rock? Its 6000sq ft. Im having trouble estimating labor time. It will require a skid steerer and wheel barrel.

when doing new work, it's fairly easy to figure out a price. Until you are established, it's hard to base your price off of others.

So many factors play a role in pricing, from material costs to location to time of season to infinite other variables.

First, calculate how much river rock you need. Cost varies with river rock. Size of stone, colour/type, amount, delivery location, etc...

Now, take your stone cost, add the price of skid steer rental if you don't have one.

Add $50-$100 for fuel and misc costs.

Now figure out how long it will take you to get the rock back there. River rock is easy to move with a skid steer, it's a major PITA to move by wheel barrow. It's hard to shovel into the wheel barrow so usually you have to hand bomb or load with a mini/skidsteer.

Figure your time, add 1-2 hours minimum for unplanned problems and multiply that by your hourly rate.

You might be more than some guys, and you might be less. But that's what it costs you to do it so you won't lose.

Things to watch for when pricing these jobs are
- will you cause sod damage, etc... with machine access
- does it require you to move things such as air conditioners (sub a professional)
- look for septics, etc... you don't want to drive over these with heavy equipment
- road access, can you dump on the road without a permit
