Can anyone tell me the right way to clean the carbon out of the muffler exhaust?

I use a wood dowel to clean out the exhaust. I remove the spark plug and lower the piston so any debris stays on top of the piston. I have an attachment for my compressor so I can run air into the spark plug hole while I clean exhaust to shot the debris out.

Thanks Ed...found some info on the internet. Said to put take off the muffler and soak it over night in some water or water/bleach mix. Dry it out...then put it back on. I will try the dowel too.

Are you referring to a muffler removed from the equipment?
I have cleaned up a large number of Lawn Boy mufflers by filling them with kerosene. then adding a little two cycle fuel and set on fire. When the fire goes out, rap it with a screwdriver handle and much of the carbon will fall off.
I do not recommend this technique with an enclosed muffler unless you can do it without the aid of gasoline. There is too much of a chance of a gasoline explosion in the enclosed muffler.
For smaller two cycle mufflers, I hang them on a piece of wire and heat them up with a propane torch, then bang them about and blow out.

Yeah, rev it to the redline and hold it there.
