I picked up a Cub Cadet with the 22hp B&S Intek V-twin. When I hit the key sometimes it starts over just fine but other times its almost like the battery just bogs when it hits the compression stroke. I can hold the key and put my hand on top of the engine to help it spin over and it'll fire right up. Should I just buy a new battery or could this be something more serious?

I would take the battery in it now to autozone, advanced auto parts etc.. and have them test it and if its bad replace it(they test batteries for free). The reason for testing it would be to rule out any charging system issues or starter problems or simply a bad connection in cables.

it pulls down to around 9.5 volts during the times when the motor stops

Had the same problem on a Toro recently. It appears to be a weak battery or starter problem, but as said above, it's a valve adjustment problem. Finally dug a little info out of the repair guy. He reluctantly gave us the valve clearances, which I think was .005 to .010 and that fixed our cranking problem.
