I use granual fert now, and looking to change to liquid because it just seems alot easier to spray rather than load 1000s of pounds of granual into spreaders.
For granual fert it costs me $65/acre or around $1.50 per 1000/sqft in materials.
Please give me advice on switching to liquid.
Average cost per acre?
or
Average cost per 1000sqft?

I have been told that liquid will be more expensive. I to would like to use liquid. Faster to apply, less bulky to store and transport.

Liquid fert is useless, shortlived, insignificant waste of time and money for both you and the client. :)

Liquid fert is more expensive bar none but it allows for us to apply multiple products at once.

WOW, $1.50/1000 granular. that sounds really high to me. I once wanted to go all liquid on fertilizer until I started checking the prices. Now I just stand on my PG and ride around all day throwing granular fert. I am glad I did not go all liquid. I would still be dragging a hose around all day. Hose dragging for round 1 and 5. All the rest is on PG. Look up the cost of Lesco 30-0-0 liquid and you will be shocked at how much is required and what it cost's.

This is my 30-0-0 label
LAWN CARE PROGRAM:
COOL SEASON GRASSES: Rates may vary from ½ to 1 pound of
nitrogen per 1000 square feet in 4 to 5 applications at 8 to 12 week
intervals for a total application rate not to exceed 3.5 to 4 pounds of
nitrogen per 1000 square feet per year.
WARM SEASON GRASSES: Rates may vary from ¾ to 1 pound of
nitrogen per 1000 square feet in 5 to 6 applications at 8 to 12 week
intervals for a total application rate not to exceed 6 to 8 pounds of
nitrogen per 1000 square feet per year.
30-0-0 liquid in a 2 1/2 gallon cost me $20.00. 50%CRN
39-0-0 granular xcu (100% slow) cost $17.00 a bag (.87/1000)

It takes 40 ounzes of liquid to get 1#/1000 so you can see the cost is way off for a product that will never last anywhere close to what granular will.

At 40 ounces I'm coming up with a cost of $2.50 per k. That's real expensive.

why not just buy urea and a big tank and mix it with water? then you can spray it and get the same amount of time out of it as granular.

That is what I do on my liquid app. I mix water soluble urea with water. It cost $14 per bag for 50 lbs of 46% urea. That totals out to around $.60 per 1k.

thats what we do too. 1500 gallon tank, one gas powered pump to circulate, and some hose to pump into the truck. that is a little bit oversimplified but you get the point.

Hey Mow Right how many pounds per gal. of urea do you mix?

The only problem with spraying urea is the surge factor that is why we use SRN when spraying and spray less just what I do though.

I actually sprayed at .75 lbs of n per 1k. So that would be 1.6 lbs of product per 1k. The cost per lb is $0.28 (14/50) so my cost per 1k was $0.45 (.28*1.6).
How many gallons pounds per gallon you should mix is based solely on how many gallons per 1k feet.
For example, you are spraying at a rate of 2 gallons per 1k. You need to apply 1.6 lbs of product per k. You would mix .8lb per gallon of urea.
The only problem with spraying urea is the surge factor that is why we use SRN when spraying and spray less just what I do though.

Yes, I do believe there is some surge growth but all my customers seem happy. I follow the weed & feed application closely with the summer slow release because I know that straight urea doesn't last long. What is your cost per k for SRN?
