I did a search and actually read about 150 of 230 or so results and still need some input. I am currently looking to purchase a new 21" mower. I don't want to spend over $700 for it as I only have 2 yards that i would need to use it on and the other yards I can use the bigger equipment. I was looking at the JD jx65 (I believe this is the model or it could be the jx75) with the option of side or rear discharge and the mulching optionfor $495. Is this a good machine and is this a good price? I was using a honda 3 speed until my worker sent it down a cliff yesterday. How does the JD compare to the Hondas? Any suggestions on a quality 21" mower would be greatly appreciated.

hondas are the only way to go, i have 5 commercials and love them, you could pick up a masters series for around $600

John Deere its the way tyo go. i have 3 jx's numerous hours still run great
JD is the way to go...
I have the jx75, but it was $700, not $495. Are you sure you're not talking about the ja60 or ja62? Those are listed at around $500.

The toro personal pace is a very good mower for the money(about 545.00 on alamia.com) I've always used toro's but last week I purchased 2 new commercial lawnboys(made by toro) you get a lightweght mower, good commercial engine(6.5 hp 2 cycle) and a gallon gas tank to boot.

i don't know about your personal paces nelson and kdj, but i have had to replace or repair the drive cable probably 7 times over the past two years, the blade cable twice, the wheels twice, and the engine dosen't run very strong any more.
if you are going to spend 500 on a 21 you might as well spend a grand and get a toro proline, or around 700 for a commercial lawn-boy.

I couldn't ask for a better mower than my JX John Deeres.
The Kawasaki motor is very strong, and easy on fuel.
I personally am an Ariens fan, but toro is a great machine too.
I've got a JD SB14 silver mower. The new one is the green JX75. The mower is faster than most of th 21"ers out there. It goes 4.1 mph. The bagger comes off real easy. I use mine about 1 hour a week. Its about 4 years old now, and still goes strong.

Well let me clear the air on this. I would never spend 1000.00 on a 21" mower. I just don't use them that much. But because I have to have one I bought a Toro Personal Pace Model# 20017
That is the one sold at Home Depot for 359.00 + Tax = 380.54
(6%) It comes with a two year Full Coverage Warranty plus Toro offered a third year if bought on the week of March 31. So I have
a three year warranty on a 22" mower that cuts and mulches better then I expected, so far I'm happy. The way I see it it was a no brainer. 380.54 into three years = 10.57 per mo or .35 a day.
This was just to good to pass up. I could give this mower away
after the third year and it wouldn't hurt me.
In your post it sounds like you are having major problems with
cables. Do you leave the mower out in the weather? If so use some W-D 40 on the cables.
Keep in mind I just got mine. But I think it will hold up just fine.

I haven't used JD, LB, or Toro 21's, so I can't comment on them. I own 2 21" Hondas which I think are fantastic. Each of my mowing crews probably averages one lawn per day where they have to pull it out, but they've been problem-free for a few years now.

You can get a toro with ohv ( 4 stroke model), with BBC System-- they last forever. and it will be less than $650. I have had these for years and consider them the best equipment I have owned-- I push the majority of my lawns with a 21"-- due to lawn tuypes and limitations--can not recommend these enough. Last time I bought JD is was junk by the end of the season-- not too impressed although it has been abot 7 years ago. YOu can get the personal pace sytem instead on the BBc system if you will not be wanting to leave you mower run while you empty the bag-- they run considerably cheaper-- I prefer the BBc. due to no restarts--good luck

If you want something that LASTS and works great, you gotta go with Honda Commercial mowers, man. They are expensive for a reason - THEY'RE THE BEST!
If I had $700 to spend on a mower I guess I'd get a job lick cleaning the sewers, go door to door begging for cans, sit on the side of the road with a sign, or do whatever I had to do to raise another $300 and then I'd go out and BUY MYSELF A HONDA COMMERCIAL MOWER.
It's kinda like asking, "The following girls want to date me....
Ugly girl down the street - date will cost $20
Rosie ODonnell - date will cost $30
Susanne Somers - date will cost $35
Jennifer Lopez - date will cost $100
I only have $40 what should I do?"
DUH! The correct answer is to somohow come up with $60 more !!!!
:D

btw, to get a Honda Masters Series or something like that would be the equivelnt of dating Jennifer Lopez' little sister.
It's just not nearly as cool as the real thing.

i love having the bbc on my lb, it really helps when emptying the bag or pausing to pick something up, go for any mower with a BBC System.

just starting out , looked at all local dealers , was looking for 36 wb JD was least expensive new. Couldn't find any used around here. decided to get 'push' type mower to begin with, all accounts are smaller ones. jx75 wooks great, it has BBC 5speed , 5th is almost a jog to keep up , and a pressurized 6hp kawi. In my area everybody knows JD , and some cust. were impressed I had one. No complaints or dislikes so far.:D

I use the Toro personal pace. It is a good choice. I paid $400 for one on ebay brand new in the box electric start which can be nice. I have always liked Toro I do not like lawn boy because of the off center wheel.
