Today was definitely a Monday. Had some employees cornering me first thing and start whining about this and about that. Mind you I will listen to you if you have a clear concise comment, suggestion, question, whatever. I just don't want to be whined to. I've got other concerns.
Think it's time to start issuing the "Hurt Feelings Report". (A friend gave this to me a couple of weeks ago).

Terrible. I and my parents own about 330 acres and it is pretty depressing. In April all our tanks had gone dry and we were watering 40 head of cattle and nine horses off public water supply. Then May we got a few good rains, one real hard and fast that created some runoff and put water back in the tanks. But haven't had much significant rain since then and these 36.....no make that 37 days of straight 100+ days has really put the hurt back on us. We haven't made any hay this year and have fed all our surplus up. Don't know what we'll do if we don't get rain soon.
Business wise it has slowed too because of the lack of rain. A large portion of my business is ranch and farm improvements, and because of the uncertainty due to the drought, not much money is being spent on those items. But at least some of the other areas of the business are picking up some of the slack.
How about you?

Were hurting too. We have about 110 ac and it's so dry the grass crunches. Only have one tank that catches runoff and it's bone dry. The creek that flows by the property is bone dry as well. We are losing a lot fo spanish oaks due to drought stress. Live oaks will be next if we don't get rain. Our property has high and low land and the high land is the driest.
Medina lake, about 6 miles from here, is 41 feet down. Just real bad all around but I know rain is coming and it will come down hard!

SpecOne
08-05-2009, 11:47 PM
We do sometimes use the drums. But in this instance, these are easier because we are still in process of laying down and grading courses of base and we move them when we start working and then move them back before we go home. As well, this is what the state specifies in project plans. Sometimes they specify drums, just depends on the job.

Well, we were suppose to start a new project yesterday. But, it was postponed for a few days because a utility contractor was doing some work in our work zone and hadn't finished yet. OK, no big deal, he's suppose to finish up tomorrow.
HOWEVER - the past two days, the only thing his equipment has been doing is sitting collecting dust!! ;)

I have three distinct areas that I work in. First, and what I started out in, is farm/ranch improvements (roads, land clearing, tank construction and maintenance, etc). Second is site prep for the oil and gas industry (roads, drilling pads, tank battery pads, retention ponds, spill containment, etc). Third area is road and highway construction.
On this particular project, I'm doing the grading work for the prime contractor who is a paving contractor. The job is mostly hot-mix over existing pavement except for a few areas that need to be cut out and redone down below the existing pavement. That's what I'm doing.

Yeah, flats are a real problem. On the JD, I'm gonna change out the front tires to foam filled aircraft tires and still considering foam filling the rears. When I was building that diversion terrace that's shown in the pics, I had to have at least two flats fixed on my Cat 140 MG. Don't have any pics yet because the tractor is coming from another dealer's lot and for some odd reason the dealer did not order the tractor with a mid mount SCV, which I find absolutely ludicrus (sp?) since 99% of people would mount a loader to this size tractor. So the mid mount scv and post hole digger will have to be ordered. The loader was on hand at my dealer's yard.
Hopefully will have it in my possession either by the end of the week or first part of next week.
I needed I new utility tractor at the ranch for building fence, moving round bales and other hay work, light shredder work, and loader work.

No, it's a brand new 2010 model. I don't need a 4WD, it's just added expense. And as far as brand goes, I don't have any problems with Deere products as far as Ag Products goes. Of course, it's also the ONLY brand sold AND serviced within 45 miles of me. The dealership is only 7 miles from me and they will come out and service if I absolutely need them to. If I had dealer support for all the brands close by, I probably would have chosen a different brand. But I gotta go with what's available.
I'm really looking forward to the Danuser post hole digger. It's a new product for them and seems to be well made. We'll see. I will give everybody a review of the attachment after I get it and use it for awhile.

Yeah the post hole digger would have to be removed to use the bucket. You have two options: you can pull the pin on the post hole digger mount and leave the mount bolted to the bucket, or if you were going to be doing some heavy loader work then unbolt the entire mount.
It's not the best solution, but I considered the fact that I would not be digging post holes and moving large amounts of dirt at the same time. So when I need the post hole digger, I would mount it onto the bucket, otherwise, I would leave it off.
I like this arrangement for the post hole digger however because I can use the loader to provide down pressure on the digger when digging in hard conditions. You can't do this with a three point mounted post hole digger unless its has a hyd down pressure kit (which never really worked that well in my opinion).

Thanks Chris!
As far as the 4WD, I just could not justify the cost. This tractor will mostly be used for loading/unloading round bales and moving round bales from storage out to the livestock. It will also be used for light tillage and then some light road maintenance around the ranch. It will also be used for light to medium duty shredding. And weather conditions here are mostly dry so I wouldn't need 4WD to get around.

The water has an added corrosion inhibitor. I never have had any rusting problems. The only thing that you have to watch for is the water freezing. But if it's cold enough to freeze water, I don't think I will be sitting on an open station tractor!!
