View Full Version : Replacing a Lug Stem on a Mini-Z

I've got a Mini-z where one of the rear drive wheel's lug stems has come loose from the back side of the hub.
Had a problem nut I was taking off, seemed difficult and was apparently seized.
When I really worked it, the backside of the stem broke lose from the hub.
Now I have a seized lugnut with its mounting stem loose from the back side.
I can't get the wheel off in it's current state.

I'm hoping someone has done this before and perhaps there is way to correct this without having to remove the hub?
Any help is appreciated!

I dont think you will get the brake drum / hub off regardless, you need to use a puller on it and you cant use the puller with the tire and rim on still...
Your going to need to get that nut off, if your good with a torch you can cut it off, if your not take it somewhere and have it done so you dont damage the rim or the drum / hub.
You will need to replace the hub / drum, as the studs are not available from us separately, regardless if they were the hole is likely stripped out now.

PJ, Thanks for the reply.
I was able to get the nut off and removed the damaged stud. The teeth on the stud are definitely stripped. For anyone who as seen the sleeve on the flange/hub:
Should there be teeth in the sleeve as well? It's smooth as can be now...

I really don't want to replace the flange/hub if I don't have to.
Also, I can't find a part number or dealer who seems to carry them?
The Hustler Parts manual doesn't list one.

I was considering getting a new stud from Northern Tool, pressing it in, if its not too far gone, with some locktite, and maybe getting a mig weld to the rear head of the stem.

The stud is part of the hub / brake drum.
We dont offer the stud as a part, sorry.
You can go to NAPA and find one and press it in or weld it in if it isn't tight enough.
Or you can buy a new hub / brake drum.

PJ,

Do you have a part number for the hub/drum?
Just for my own curiosity and future reference. I'd like to have it on hand.
You never know!

Thanks again for all your replies. :)

I guess I didn't think you may have a Mini Z 36 or 42 inch cut? this changes things a bit.
Or is this a 44 or 52 inch unit?
Let me know.

PJ,

It's a Mini-Z 36, with the Kawi 17HP.

Ahhhhh......
Different story....
I was thinking you had a 44 or 52 inch unit.
The hub with the studs in it is part # 600970 for your Mini Z 36.
We dont offer the studs separately.

Good thing I asked for the part number.
Sure enough, the hub cracked trying to press in a replacement...
I guess that's bound to happen when the hub stem specifcs can not be identified.
Any chance of getting that corrected in a future parts update?

I'd go to my closest dealer, but they fubar'd ordering blades and air filter for this unit, so my confidence level is less than optimistic.
Especially with a part like this...

Are there any competent online dealers that I can order direct from?
I don't see the point in having to drive to the dealer, taking my parts manual along to show the dealer how to order the parts, then paying him his markup. He should be paying me for showing him how to recognize parts for a machine sitting on his floor...

Anyone have any ideas?

PJ: Can Southern Turf Equipment Inc. in the Atlanta area get this part for me?
I'm really in a bind here.

I will let the technical publication guys know we need the hub in the parts break down.
As to online dealers, I am not aware of what dealer do or dont sell parts though there online stores, you have to look around I guess.
As to ordering it from Southern Turf, they are the distributor for all the dealers in Georgia, South Carolina and part of North Carolina, they sell only to authorized Hustler dealers, not the public.
You can order the part # I gave you from any Hustler dealer easily.
