My Ariens ZTR, its a 1742 EZR, is kicking my butt lately... Here is whats it doing and what I've done.

Out of the blue the mower started to spitt and sputter to the point that it would want to die. First thought that came to mind was I was out of gas, looked at the gauge I had 3/4 tank. Once I get it back home I checked the plug it was right on, good gap and the color was brown, and was sparking great. Next I moved to the fuel filter, there was some gunk in it, so I replaced it. After that I tested it out, still same problem. From there I drained my gas tank and put new gas in it and started to look at the carb, I completely tore it apart, bought the rebuild kit. I let the carb sit in carb cleaner for a few hours. After the soak, I blew it out with my compressor and installed all new parts included in the rebuilt kit. After that I talked with the mechanics at my local dealership, they said it could possibly be the fuel pump, so I replaced that. My problem was still there. So I talked to the mechanics again, the told me to check out the pick up tube in the tank, so I did that. I found a lid to a 2.5oz 2cylce oil mixer in there, it was under the pick up tube. So I thought I was golden after I got that sucker out. Well it ran great that night, I mowed my grass and the neighbors grass with no troubles. So today I went to mowing again, I got 3 yards into it, and got a slight stumble. Took a break for lunch and I had 3 left to do, I did the first 2 with no problems, on the third I did about 1/4 and she spitt, sputtered and died. It wouldn't restart, had to push it onto the street and winch it up onto the trailer.

Sorry its such a story but I'm at a loss here, I dont know what else to do with this thing. I'm fairly handy with a wrench and can usually make most small engines work, so I'm bout to throw in the towel on this one. Please HELP ME!!

You need to go back through everything. Check for spark again then remove the fuel hose from the carb and hold it over a container then crank the engine over, Is the fuel pump working ? Hold a container under the float bowl and loosen it, Is there ample fuel in the bowl ?

If it has a fuel cut-off solenoid on the bowl do you hear/feel it click when the key is turned on and off repeatably ?

If you have spark and ample fuel remove the valve cover and check for a bent/warped push-rod and check/adjust the valves;

The fuel filter was clogged up on the inlet nipple and the fuel solenoid wasn't clicking or doing anything when. So I replaced both, and it ran like a champ. Cut 7 yards this afternoon and it didn't miss a beat.
