Man wrecks neighbour's house with bobcat

A man is in a serious condition in a Perth hospital after allegedly going on a rampage in a bobcat machine, badly damaging a neighbour's home and then setting himself on fire.
Police said the 42-year-old man drove the mini-mechanised shovel into a neighbouring home in the semi-rural suburb of Carmel, south-east of Perth, about 10pm last night.
He's alleged to have used the bobcat to build a makeshift ramp up to the verandah of the home, before driving in and wreaking havoc inside.
A police spokeswoman said the man then emerged from the home in the bobcat before destroying a brick shed and badly damaging a fibreglass pool.
Emergency authorities said nearby homes were evacuated after gas and electricity supplies were cut off and gas pipes and power cables were damaged during the rampage.
The spokeswoman said negotiators and members of the tactical response group tried to reason with the man before he doused himself with petrol and set himself alight.
He was badly burned before fire crews managed to extinguish the flames but his injuries were not life threatening, she said.
He was taken to Royal Perth Hospital, where he remains in a serious but stable condition.
