I have a Lowes (LT115) John Deere rider that I'm selling on Ebay. It doesn't mulch or mow that well and I could use the exercise of walking it.

I want to get a decent walk behind in either a 36" or 42" - new or used in the Louisville KY area. I'd like to be in the $1,200 range - but could go higher if it makes a big difference..

Does anyone have experience with the Sears walk behind (33" commercial or residential)?

I'd appreciate any / all suggestions.

Thank you,
K

Check out the Quick 36 series machines ... a little more expensive, but well worth it !!

I would recommend watching Craigslist and finding a good used Commercial walkbehind. Its getting towards the end of the season (atleast for us in NJ) and with the economy a lot of companies are unloading stuff, or folding.

With the Sears "Commercial" stuff, you are getting what you pay for.

I found a used Toro Proline vintage 1990 on Craigslist for $400 and mowed my lawn once and unloaded my JD Z225 Zero Turn. The cut is so much nicer. I then found a Toro Z Master and I'm in heaven.

The difference between a real commercial mower and a regular mower is night and day. I regularly cut my neighbors lawn and I did his with the WB Toro and he asked me what I did different cause it looked so much better.

I would buy a used commercial one instead of dumping money into a Sears "Commercial" unit. Just look at the price difference between a Sears Commercial WB and lets say an Exmark. There is a large difference and this is for a reason. As a homeowner you will have to beat the living daylights out of the Exmark to try and kill it where the Sears one may last a couple seasons.

Just my experience and opinion as I learned my lesson.

I recently purchased a 10-15 year old 48" commercial Hydro Walk
Paid $1400, has a brand new Kawasaki 14hp engine.

after trying out many used machines I would suggest a Hydro Walk machine as opposed to a belt drive. They are much easier to control and cut around thinks like all the flower beds the wife keeps adding, stops on a dime, and will turn a zero radius if you need them to.
This machine cuts smooth as a babies butt.
Even better than my OLD simplicity rider and almost as easy to run as my antique Hahn-Eclipse.

I wouldn't take a sears mower if you gave it to me. This commercial mower is one tough piece of machinery, built for the long haul and will most likley out last me.

Can you give me tips on what to look for or watch out for when buying a used commercial mower?

At this point... I'd gamble that Better Outdoor Products will have another mega-sale in the middle of winter.

Last December I picked up the Quick 36 with a 16hp KAI and couldn't be happier with my purchase at $2250.00. Granted I don't think they'll be that low since there was a 2009 price increase, but with a sale and free shipping offer I wouldn't be surprised to see $2500 delivered to your door.

Granted, spring growth cutting at 2 1/2 inches did clog the deck, but it's been clean sailing since raising to 3" mulching ever since.

Also, a bunch of the "pros" have expressed there issues with the BOP. Maybe a good deal is to be had on a single season use if the offer was right.
