I am looking at buying a backhoe attachment for my Case skidsteer and was wondering what anybodys opinions on using one of them? I've got an older Case 1845 and the back hoe is a larger one that a guy rigged up off of a Case tractor. I will be using it a few times a year but I do have some excavating projects to do around my house this fall that it would come in handy for.

I personally would rather rent a mini x than use one but that just me. I've always thought they look awkward. I know a landscaper up north that has one of those 'mini-hoe' attachments and he loves it.

We have one for our skidsteer. I works pretty good we use it all the time for pulling up shrubs or digging footings for retaining walls.

If you can't find a used one out there ebay, craigslist or just check with dealerships (what I would look for first if you only use it a hand full of times a year) then check into a Bradco hoe. Mini hoes are kind of a joke, but that's IMHO and .02

The ability to place material anywhere around the machine is what makes having a mini a much better choice over a backhoe. However, for occasional use, the backhoe attachments would work well. For anything trench related, including footings, they'd work fine but you have to plan out your moves a little more given that you only have 180 degrees of rotation.

I went and looked at it again and I think I'm to get it and try it out, the worst I would have to do is sell it. Thanks for the help!
