Well, I went on vacation for a few weeks and left my new back yard to fend for its self. I did have the in ground set for proper watering while I was away AND it appears we got tons of rain. (My 5 gal bucket for dog waste was FULL of water when we got back!) The grass looks great. Nice and dark green, Most if not all of the joints are gone and there are ZERO dead spots. Even with the dogs!

I did notice before I cut it, that there were a few sprouts of nut grass growing up. We call it nut grass around here. I'm not sure if that is the actual name of it or not! Its not Crab grass thats for sure. I do know this stuff can and will take over a yard of Bermuda or other fine grass pretty quickly. Should I be very concerned about it with the Zoysia? If so, what should I use to nip it in the bud?

That is probably yellow nutsedge. If you just have a few; pull them. If there are numerous then a application of "Dismiss" will be needed. Check the label and wait on that. Cut back on the water and let the sod dry out. Nutsedge flourishes in damp environments. Pulling will ensure that you get the nutlets that spread the stuff. Can you post a photo of the worst piece of sod?

Impala, I have Jamur Zoysia early on I had issues with nut grass mainly growing in the joints, I used a product called sedge hammer and spot treated with a pump up sprayer, it did not damage the Jamur and killed off the nutgrass. My lawn is now 9 months old and it chokes out all of the nutgrass and weeds, I do use barricade pre emergent herbicide.

Never heard of that stuff, but I will start looking! Thanks.

I have spoken to several folks around the area. The general consensus is that the Zoysia will choke out just about all weeds IF a pre emergent is used. Thats my plan for next season. If I find the SH then I'll use it. If not, I'm going to let it ride until spring.

you can find info on it here

once the edges joined together the nutgrass basically was not an issue, with my lawn the pre emgt works well basically weed free. are you having any problems cutting your lawn, my is like carpet very dense, I just purchased a reel mower as it is very difficult for my torro roatary.

I have only cut it 3 times since it was installed. The joints are gone but it is fairly uneven. I'm going to top dress next spring. Hopefully I can smooth it out a bit.

I am currently using a 5 1/2 hp Craftsman 22" rear bagger push mower. It is hard to push, but with the super sharp blade, it cuts well. (I sharpen and balance my own blades. VERY SHARP!!) I am looking for a decent reel mower. Hopefully with the season drawing to a close and the poor economy, I can pick one up off of CL for cheap. I know its kinda sad to think of guys having to sell their stuff, but I've got the money so its better I buy it cheap than let it rust away in some storage room.

Have you top dressed yours? If you did, how long did it take to cover again? What are you feeding it?

Thanks for the link!

only using black diamond top soil in the bag, buy 6 bags every other weekend and have been slowly building up the low spots, I am close to being were a I want to be, I do know the areas that I built up are a lot greener than the rest of the lawn, I am going to lay down some iron soon, I use Nitro-Phos Superturf Fertilizer 19-4-10 its made in houston designed for our area. I have been follwing another thread about push type top dressers, getting some good ideas,
