Hello,
Last fall I rescued a suffering weeping willow from HomeDepot. I planted it immediately.

This Spring, I waited to see which branches were alive and growing leaves and cut the dead ones out.

The tree has tried growing shoots right around the bast three times, and I snipped the shoots everytime thinking it would encourage it to grow the existing top branches.

What are these shoots at the base called, normally? Did I do the right thing by pruning them? What would you recommend I do to help this fella out?

Thank you in advance,

-Walter

Shoots from the base(water sprouts, or suckers) indicate a problem in the trunk that does not allow water to flow to the top. Injury, restriction, or fungus canker. If it does not recover--get a new tree.
