the lawnmower in the back of the second picture is more superior than the red one. That is a for sure haha. but as for what is wrong with the red lawn mower I can't see anything glaring. Does it have something to do with the tires?

LOL, not that new style JD, the old style is superior compared to the new crap they are putting out now.
And yes, the ROPS are too short. I wonder in the back does they raise up and down? Just a thought. I know some of the compact tractors they hinge in the middle, but that one looks to be stationary

Oh yeah, nothing like the old 420 and 430 Diesel they had!
My uncle had the 430, he said he looked forward to mowing in the summer!
But if you look close you can see where the previous owner cut the ROPS then welded it back.
I actually saw this tractor at another one of their dealers (Bader & Sons equipment, the St Louis MI store) so I sat on it and my head was higher than the ROPS. I'm around 5'11"
I should've taken a picture, but I'll be headed by that dealer Tuesday, if its still there I'll take a pic of me sitting on it. Boy, me and my uncle sure had a good laugh about it.

I have the 855 JD compact tractor with that awesome 3 cylinder Yanmar diesel engine. Engine runs like a top, has almost 2000 hours on it. Great machine. Engine has never been touched, doesn't burn any oil at all.
My uncle has a real small tractor, smaller than the one in that picture, I think it was the 455, had the small Diesel in it also. Great machines, why can't they put out products like that I will never know.

I have a '84 John Deere 111 Hydro for my own personal "collection". Got it in May of '07, runs great, lady I bought it from always had it serviced by the dealer. Well late last year the coil started going out and now I have to replace it ($45) 11hp Briggs, 38" Deck.
I know of a time when the "Super Garden tractors" shined.
Even Sears built one, the FF series, made to complete with the JD 400 and the Cub Cadet 982.
(Man, I'd love to get my hands on any of those 3)

LOL, a 111, one of my grandfathers had one, sold it, bought one from the dealer 5 years ago. 3 grand, biggest POS ever, He cusses at that thing.
My other grandfather still has his, just a couple days ago he put new piston, rings, pan and head gasket, and points. It's a 312 or a 314. Single cylinder Kohler. Great engine, body, transmission. Hyrdrostatic. I think he said 27 years old. THAT is a machine.
He has never done engine work on it till just now. Tranny has never been touched. The deck is rough though lol,, he likes to run over lots of things.

Yeah after a while I was kinda wishing I had waited and bought something bigger.
He paid $3K?! Shoot, I paid $200 for mine, included a Bagger and Mulching Kit.
I'm thinking after I fix my JD, I might put it up for sale, buy something bigger.
Or maybe a cheap project tractor, give me something to work on.

nope its a 400 with 3 point hitch we have a rototiller and I built a box scraper for it and added wheels so if we want to use it like land leveler just put the wheels down plus the 4 way blade makes it very handy. Right now we are planing on building a pull type pan its just so handy we keep cumming up wit more uses for it
Did ya notice the custom grille?

They now feel and run like the old style....They realy screwed up the last batch though. That is on the Z-tracks...Nothing wrong witht the newer real Deeres, Just the Home Depot/Lowes crap they put out to gain market share witht the people whoe would not spend the money on the real Deere's.
