I was just wondering what engine oil you guys use in your mowers, Just wondering if you use automotive oil or what is best to use.

Thanks for any help!

You should use Dino oil for at least the first 100 hours of use on a new machine ... then maybe somewhere around 150 hours I go to full synthetic, manufacturer recommended weight !!

Kohler says you can change to syn oil when you hit 50 hours

Full synthetic always, only thing I keep dino around is one machine takes 20w-50 as hydraulic oil,
another takes a 10w-30 non-detergent motor oil, couple of other odd applications.

Everything else I run 10w-30 Full synthetic, cars, truck, the equipment, yes, everything else.

Same here...diesel oil is a severe duty oil and will hold up in air cooled engines

I have been using Valvoline 30W for years without any issues on my equipment.

Kohler states "At-Least" 50 hrs. but, Tech support recommends 75 hrs. to be on the safe side.....

Yep, I like to wait till 100 hours before switching to syn. Change at 5 to 10 hrs with Kohler oil, then at 100 for the switch to syn.

I pick Kohler oil simply because it can't hurt. I've had kohlers that have ended up burning a crazy amount of oil by 500 hours, so I've learned to be very cautious about the oil in the beginning. I don't know if it actually matters, but the last few I've done as I described are burning almost NO oil in 100 hours, less than 8 ounces. Which for a Kohler, is excellent. One engine has 1,200 hrs now and the other 600.

Mobil 1 or Castrol synthetic 10w-30- This, only after 80+ hours with standard SAE 30.

If you stick with one brand and weight form day one it will burn way less in the long run. I had that problem on my 04 silverado, it would burn a quart in 1000 miles. I tried multiple brands until I put Mobil 5w30, hardly any burning at all with Mobil. So, sticking to one brand will help. The engine I guess you could say gets "aquainted" with the certain characteristics of the certian oil. But, since most of the stuff I have was used when I bought it, 15W40 Rotella Diesel oil is what I use.
