We have decided to buy a tractor next year, mainly for loading mulch but it will also be used for some bush hogging and finishing mowing. We need to find around a 12 foot flex wing that has the cut quality of a ZTR. I guess the main importance is for the machine to stripe. So my question is: is there a flex wing mower with a great cut quality and that will lay down a nice stripe?

Am I totally off base? Does anyone have a finish mower that will lay down a stripe?

I have a 6ft caroni finish mower that doesnt lay stripes. what you probably need is a reel mower like they use on small golf courses. But I have no idea where to get one or I'd have one.If you find one let us know. I wants me one.

Don't worry about the lack of replies, this section doesn't get as much traffic as the others do. I would suggest you get the flex wing that you can afford and that best fits your needs. If you are worried about striping you can build a stripe kit for each deck.

Im guessing your not gonna find much. You probably don't want something that lays any or much of a stripe, I think it would be pretty hard to make 12ft wide stripes look good considering the tractor is gonna hit bumps and whatnot and not wanna track straight. Id say find something that gives a good cut and then if you decided you cant live without stripes then either make a kit or have one fabricated for you.

i know there is a big difference in grass from north to south, but up here pretty much anything will stripe, much better with a roller kit. if you want nice defined stripes gets rollers behind the mower, bout the only way. thats why reel mowers look so good, they all have rollers on them, and without something to push the grass in the direction your cutting you won't get a stripe, and all tow behind mowers are about the same, pick one....

Thanks for the replies guys. We have a couple very large flat wide open areas we currently use ztr;s on. The customers really like the stripes after we get done. The goal here is to mow with a tractor and not announce it to the customer, so the cut quality is important to us.

Im no expert with tractor mowers but this just sounds like it is gonna end badly, the customer is expecting a nice clean cut with stripes that IMO cant be delivered with a tractor mower, like I said Im no expert though.

My first question is what do you plan to mow with the flex wing cutter? You can not bush hog with a flex wing finish mower. They are belt driven, and you will do nothing more than smoke the belts every time. I ran a 18 foot, 3 section Bush Hog brand finish mower for a while and it did not stripe, or cut like a ztr mower. The blade speed just is not fast enough to have a good cut quality.

his post read that he wants to buy a tractor to bush hog and fnish mow with, not a finish mower to bush hog with.

i can't say much about the stripes, but i have cut with a flex wing finish mower, with the correct hp at the pto, and decent grass, not 2 feet high, they have an excellent cut quality. and make sure the blades aren't dull.....

We will be using separate mowers for finish mowing and bush hogging. Thanks

You should look at the lastec pto driven mowers; they seem to be pretty nice.

Progressive mower company is the best that I know of, I had a 12 footer 3 gang WHAT A MOWER!! I pulled it with a 1630 JD 50 HP cost about $9000 will mow at speeds of 15mph or more, Great for airports, as some of yaall would say "GET R DONE!!"
