I just picked up a new customer that had sod put in about a year ago.
They would like for me to aerate this fall.Is that going to tear up the sod? Or would it be ok to go ahead and aerate?

Be sure that it is well rooted into the subsoil. If it is not and you use a rolling aerator you could and most likely will roll it up. If there are any weak or discolored areas grab the turf and see if you can lift it. If you can you have a problem even with vertical thrust aerators and for sure with rolling aerators. If it is solidly grown in you should not have a problem.
The biggest mistake most homeowners make with new sod is watering it too much so that it does not or it takes a long time to root into the subsoil.

You could aerate after 2 months if it was watered in properly.
A year? No problem.
