If you are killing of an existing yard what kind of soil prep is needed to put down sod?
Does the old dead grass need to be entirely removed? After that Tilling then box raking?

Yes. Till, rake out the debris, level the soil and lay the sod.

If you are removing the sod with a bobcat, take off 3 or 4 inches and replace with a nice sandy soil. Or, you can hit the yard with a tiller, remove rocks, top dress with a touch of sand and grade it.
If it's sod, I would water it once a day for the first week or two. After that you can water it normally, 2 or 3 times per week. Don't forget your turf starter fertilizer, put it down before your sod.
