if its a regualr customer you apply it to their account. If its a 1 time customer you inform them of the mistake for honesty is the best policy.

Agreed, there is certain business ethics you should abide by.
I have one customer though that if I'm there working on her property while she is home, she will pay me on the spot.
Occasionally she will leave and just wants to pay me before I finish and it's over what the bill is. I just apply the balance to the next visit.
Sometimes she leaves me a blank, signed check and tells me to fill it in. On those occasions, I wish my morals and ethics weren't so strong. I'd just write it out for a large sum, pack my bags, cash it and run.

If a client overpays I give it back or credit it to the next mowing unless they specify it was a tip. Honesty is ALWAYS the best policy.

The fact that the question is being asked says alot about the OP.

I have had this customer since the beggining of the year, they always pay me like 10 bucks more than what I charge
Did a leak cleanup, they have me extra 20 bucks.
Did there hedges give me extra 15.
Do their lawn every 3-4 weeks. St. Augustine does not grow at all. They pay 15 extra.
I don't know why, but they always do. I tell them the price and it's like they don't hear it right and add more. I need to just tell them the next time it's free because they are over paying me.

I had a customer last week who thought they were late on their bill when in fact they had payed it 2 weeks before. :dizzy:
They payed for the next month too and payed an extra $25 for being late. I gave them a call and they told me to keep the $25 and add the other as a credit but I went ahead and made it all a credit. Just the right thing to do.

If the customers tips you like that its because your doing great work and they applaud it. It also means your not over charging. G
Great job.
credit their account/balance forward(credit) on their next statement.

My billing program adds a credit to the customers next bill. I have a couple of customers who overpay me. Sometimes they will state it's a tip other times its just easier to write a check for $350-400 then to write a check for $337.68 or 372.86.

Depends on the customer, if its a regular customer that i know and they give me a dollar or two extra i take it as a tip because i know thats what they are doing. but if its someone who is generally cheap or i do not work with much, i notify them and see there result, which often just turns into just keep it! So just be honest!

I would've pointed the mistake out to them and let them make the call. They say keep it, I would still haggle a little bit to try and get them to take it back. If that fails I'll just enter it into Quick Books as a credit for that customer and use it on their next service.
