I have 916 square feet and I need to put 3 inches of top soil down. How do I calculate this?

916x0.25=229 cubic feet
229 divided by 27 equals 8.48 cubic yards
You'll need to figure in for settling depending on the make up of the dirt. If its going to settle 20% then add 20% to the 8.48 cubic yards which will equal 10.18 cubic yards

Your looking at about 13 yards.
A yard of material covers just under 100 sq. ft.. Actually, it is something like ".93" yd. covers 100 sq. ft. at 3" deep. With dirt, you have to allow approx. 30% for compaction and setting, also.

Question - For installing sod, should I compact the soil prior to installing?
