how late in the year can I do it and is topsoil a must? I have cleared a bunch of trees but I am not quite ready yet. It will be fescue. thanks

In Wisco we are already in the season, however, we are not getting September weather, so it is a little troubling. Here we can hopefully get seed to establish if it germinates b4 Mid-Oct. You should be able to go later.

Ideally, you want to seed/starter fertilizer between now and mid October. A sprinkler system is almost a requirement to keep the seed moist until germination. Don't forget maintenance fertilizer throughout the fall/winter months (19-5-9).
